I took Prozac while I was pregnant with my 4th child, only after my doctor insisted there would be no effects on my unborn child. I admit I was in need of an antidepressant, and it did allow me to be a better mother, but after my child was born he was hard to settle, cried constantly and to this day is very anxious. He is 3 now an all though my doc seems to think there is no correlation between Prozac and his behavior, I think differently. My other children are so easy going. Including my 5th child. I stopped taking the Prozac when we decided to have #5 and we have a very good baby. Easy to soothe and very "go with the flow". My doc put me back on Prozac while I was in the hospital recovering from a c-section and since then (18 months ago) if have gained over 50 pounds. I admit the advantage of Prozac is wonderful, I was able to function and didn't make a mountain out of a mole hill. But I insist the weight gain is due to the Prozac. I have done some research in books and via internet and Prozac is used to treat obesity and overeating issues, but it seems to be doing the opposite for me. I think more research needs to be done. Prozac has been around for such a long time and its benefits are wonderful, but my weight gain is leading to other problems. My fourth child is 3 now and would really like to know if anyone out there has taken Prozac while pregant. I would like to know if your child is a little on the obsessive compulsive side. It seems he can go from extremely loving to extremely mean in a matter of seconds and very hard to calm down. He has a hard time adjusting, and new experiences to not go over well with him.
Thank you! I gained 30 pounds from Prozac that I simply cannot shed. I was 120 pounds when I started it (I am 5'7") and now cannot get below 150. PROZAC CAUSES WEIGHT GAIN. I was always naturally thin, and now I am not despite exercise and a near-perfect diet. I wish I would have been warned, and I wish the medical community would step up and admit that they don't know how these drugs even work, and the possibilities that might exist when messing with the intricate relationships of neurotransmitters in the brain. You can tell me all day it is "rare", and has nothing to do with my RMR, but I know better. I am still living in a body that is NOT mine.
I'm getting a little tired of hearing people say the weight gain in not conducive to Prozac or it's affiliates. I see more and more people stating this is in fact the situation they are dealing with, and continually people who are NOT on the drug, say it isn't a actor. And just because I'm vocalizing does not mean I need to just 'take my meds', this is a serious concern for those of us that have weight concerns.
Please excuse my being blunt, but I felt it needed to be said.
The weight gain effect from Prozac, which is not all that common, is not related to the resting metabolism rate so supplements do not make sense. Try www.masteringfood.com.
