muscle tension?

recently, I was just diagnosed by my family physician that I have anxiety. I've been under stress for a while now, every single day.  I have numerous classical symptoms such as heart palpation, sweating, dizziness. I have some unusual ones too, such as pain, sometimes burning sensation in my hand, and feet (especially fingers and toes) it was on and off, and now it is better, i have less pain, even less burning sensation now. just numbness/tingling sometimes.  I also have some twitches. My hand is shaking and feeling weak for my extremities, feels like I can't use my muscles, but it seems like my muscles are working okay (maybe little below average), just trembles and twitches sometimes
Now i have another symptoms that is really freaking me out. It's something I never felt and seen before. When i shake my head (left to right/up and down), lower my arms (after lifting my arms), dropping my legs (after lifting leg), i will get this weird vibrating, unsmooth sensation of my muscles, like I am a robot (unsmooth motion like ticking of the clock when i move slowly). It is quite visible in some actions. (dropping arm, see muscle movement) In some movements, I can hear the joints cracking.  there is no pain.
Can you let me know what is wrong? could the new symptoms relate to any other illness? Thank you!  I am very anxious about this...

OK no one has posted here for 2 and a half years...but I only just found this page and it's the only place where I have EVER seen my symptoms described so perfectly. If anyone who posted here originally is still around on the site, I'd love to hear how it is going i.e. if you sorted it out!

Last month I was smoking out and I got insanely tense and started flipping out.  i did not know what was going on and I called the ambulance and they told me to relax.  So after 4 hours it went away and everything was normal.  Then I have had 2 severe panic attacks in the last couple of weeks.  My left arm started hurting and then my chest and we went to the ER.  they did an EKG and said it was fine and I left.  Then i went to the doctor again because of the chest and arm pain and they said i had inflammation of the ribs and its cartilage.  everything else was due to stress.  this last week has been hell on earth..i went to see a psychologist and he was so freaked out about how i was that they rushed me up to see a psychiatrist and she prescribed me Klonopin..1/2 a pill twice a day...i feel better overall but there is definitely anxiety there and those weird tingling and burning sensations all over my body..so I am always thinking I am going to die and that I have 60 million diseases i have diagnosed myself with...i want to go to a neurologist first and make sure it is only anxiety..that should make me feel better i hope...and i have this weird sensation in my eye and it feels like it wants to twitch or someone is slightly pushing on it...it is insane what your mind can do to you...take care everyone...oh this website is great

I came across an article that speaks of Flapping Tremor (Asterixis), and it defines like this:

"This tremor is a coarse, slow, nonrhythmic movement that occurs when a person stretches out the arms and extends the hands. This tremor commonly results from liver failure and so has been called liver flap. However, it may also result from kidney failure and brain damage (encephalopathy) due to a metabolic disorder."

I found it here: http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec06/ch091/ch091c.html

This comes close to what I'm experiancing ... Have you had any progress with your symptoms?

I have been going through the same thing lately. I am shaky all day. I have been on Zoloft for many years and do have a lot of anxiety. I have been a very shaky person most of my life but lately it seens to have increased. It is mostly in both hands and sometimes my head. I feel tension in the neck and shoulder area. I am a terrible worry wart and I get myself worrying about Parkinson's. My dr. feels it is what is called "essential tremors" or from anxiety. Whatever it is it is quite aggravating and bothersome.

Progress report:
I've been prescribed Xanax 0.25 mg 3 x per day.  I've only been trying it out a couple times in the past couple weeks, since it doesn't have to be taken regularly.  It seems to take a little bit of the "edge" off, but the unsmooth muscle movements are still there, albeit to a lesser degree.  I somehow don't think this is going to solve the problem...  Xanax has been described as a mild tranquilizer, so the effects last only about 8 hours or so and begin working in about 30 minutes.

Has anyone managed to find any info about what we are feeling as it pertains to anxiety and not Parkinson's or some other disease?

Hi all!

I have been experiencing some symptoms similar to nerve popping which i describe as twitching.I had this invonlontary TWITCHING in my left THUMB that lasted for about 6 days,it was not non stop but intermitenly during the days...that went away and now i have my right FOREARM muscle twitching up and down like a contraction of my nerves or muscles?? dont know which...?..i also felt the same sensation in my ribcage(lower right side) twiching was real fast and lasted 10 minutes on and off...I decided to go to the gym today thinking it would was stress and that exercise would relieve these symtoms but now i have all sorts of twiches in my legs which i can visibly see!!!.....it is quite scary when you start googling the net for answers so i thought someone here could enlighten me with a possible answer.Thank you !!

I have been suffering the same symptoms you guys are describing in the last 2 months.  The only Dr I haven't seen is the neurologist.  I have taken Klonopin on occassion in the past for anxiousness but now feel even more shaky when I take it.
I do not want to take a med daily.  I feel like I should be able to kick this by myself but after 7 years of this I have not been able to.

Hi,

I am not noticing any progress, really.  I have an appointment to see the doctor on Monday, so that's when I'll have him check my muscle movements.  I know that I feel worse when I worry about it and better when not thinking about it.  I tried your recommendation of tiring out the muscle and it works for me, too.  When I do about 15-20 situps, my stomach muscles do not shake anymore like they do from 1-15 situps.  But then, of course, it comes back again shortly.

The thing that worries me is that besides this website, there is virtually no information available that I can find that describes what we are feeling as far as unsmooth muscle movements as it pertains to anxiety.  They always refer to Parkinson's.  Does anyone have any references to resources that describe what we are experiencing as anxiety?

I'm not taking any meds, but I may consider it to get rid of this awful muscle problem, if that is at all possible.  It's hard to be optimistic when you just feel the same thing every day and you know it isn't right.  Can't anybody help????

Hi again saveme,

Yep, exercise helps a lot. Progress ? Well for me it depends on the day, one day I feel totally 100 % healthy and the next day my neck and back ache so much that it is hard to believe it is all because of anxiety.

Hello,

I went to see my doctor yesterday.  She thinks it's caused by anxiety.  She says that I do not know how to relax my muscle, my muscle all over are stiff.  Anyway, I just want to share this with you guys.  I observed that when I life my leg up and down for a while and tire my muscle out, the unsmooth motion decreases dramatically!  but it comes back gradually a few minutes later.  I think that when my tire my muscles out, the tense muscle cannot provide anymore resistence, and so the unsmooth motion will be temporily gone.  I guess the solution for our problem is like what jani34 and shakyguy suggested: stretch, exercise, not to be too self-conscious (positive attitude), maybe take a bath once a while, and stop testing myself for the symptoms..i think we all will get better soon.  So how is your guys' progress?

Hi Shakyguy,
It all sounds like you're suffering from severe anxiety.

"i just noticed that my when i bend my knee i get the same feeling. Is this related to that "cog-wheel" thing that parkinsons people have? i am so scared right "
Don't be scared. Your symptoms do not sound like Parkinsons at all. It is not a disease that suddenly spreads all over your body. I can not blame you for being irrational or hysterical, I've been there myself ;-)
Go see neurologist, he will assure you it is not Parkinsons. I would be very surprised to hear it was after reading your symptoms. AND if you have been googling the net for "answers" stop it right now. Internet can be a real enemy to a person suffering from anxiety.

thanks for your comment jani34,  i have a question for you then, how long does it take for you to resolve the symptoms?  i am trying to do some stretching, but so far, not too much help.  Do you recommend any additional exercise or techniques? thanks

I notice this unsmooth motion in the muscles pretty much all over my body.  Sometimes it's more than other times.  Mainly, I feel it in my shoulders, ankles, arms, when I move my thumbs slowly by themselves, sometimes the stomach muscles, too.  When I'm more relaxed, I notice it less.  When I think about it a lot, it is worse...

So far, I'm just waiting to see if it will go away after some reasonable amount of time of doing relaxation techniques, stretching, and exercise (and therapy).

I'm also uncertain about what to do, since this is really the only site I read about such a phenomenon.  But, I'm going with the doctors'  recommendations that I do not have a serious disease, and that's fine by me... :)  I can't wait to feel well again.  I certainly look forward to it!  (Positive attitude helps, I'm told!)

Hello,

I think I know what you are worrying about.. I have had the same symptoms, last summer I thought it must be Parkinsons after googling the net... This unsmooth motion, I know what you mean.
BUT:
It is not the kind of rigidity that one has when suffering from Parkinsons. I'm not a doctor but this is what people who know say.. In Parkinsons the rigidity and so called "Cog-wheel rigidity" is a symptom observed in PASSIVE limb. So muscle is not active. It is impossible to notice and diagnose yourself. Your are using the muscle..

"Cog-wheel rigidity is the phrase used to describe the feeling of periodic resistance to passive movement felt by the examiner in a parkinsonian limb"

It all sounds like anxiety to me, but what you described might be what is called cogwheeling so you can ask your doctor about that as a possibility although the distribution of it with arms and legs suggests that it is not neurological, but psychological.

Dear Saveme,

I feel EXACTLY what you are feeling with the muscles vibrating or having an unsmooth feeling.  See my question from 9/27.  It certainly is frustrating.  It is actually horrible the way I feel, every single day.  My doctor and neurologist repeatedly tell me that it is not MS or Parkinson's, but it is anxiety.  The doctor on this website said it is Severe Anxiety.  No kidding...

I have been trying jogging on the treadmill almost every day, keeping the heart rate up to 140-150 beats per minute for 20-30 minutes, which is recommended for someone of my age (34).  Make sure to stretch well before and after exercising.  I then soak in a hot tub for 10 minutes.

I am doing deep breathing exercises several times a day.  I've also purchased a progressive muscle relaxation tape that I listen to every night before I go to sleep.  I've also started seeing a psychologist who specializes in anxiety.  It was his recommendation to do the deep breathing and progressive relaxation exercises.

I must say that I'm feeling slightly better after about two weeks of these exercises.  I'm taking no medication, and I hope to keep it that way, but we'll see.

At least now you know that you are not alone in what you are feeling.  Everyone tells me it's anxiety, so I'm going with that.  I find that searching the internet for sites that describe one's symptoms just makes me feel worse.  Try to avoid that.  This site is great, though!  We can help each other from our experiences.

Best wishes,
Shakyguy
