Buspar/ to prozac

Okay. so I have been relatively new to this side of the forum. I am suffering from depression due to thyroid issues. I am going to be seeing a psych soon. My doctor has put me on buspar. Which I was told it would kick in next week. So far have seen nothing from it. I am looking for something that is not going to make me a complete zombie, but I need help with the anxiety as well as all of the mood swings. I have many friends that are on prozac and  has done wonders for them. Just wondering any personal experiences. i am on xanax .5 daily for right now. Short term until these other meds kick in.  The only other one I have heard of is wellbutrin. Any thoughts or ideas thanks!

Thanks. I am trying to hang in there but, it is so hard. I had what felt like a 50 lb goiter. Its now shrunk down to 10. So all of that inflammation and swelling is going down. I think i might try wellbutrin first. Then prozac. I am definately going to have a ton of anxiety when this is all said and done. I just wanted to be so normal so badly. Now thtat my lump is leaving me Im kinda scared:) Thanks

I find Prozac to work really well for me for both anxiety and depression;  however, you do need to take an anti-anxiety med until it kicks in (several weeks).  I have severe anxiety and depression from Hyperthyroidism, and take both Prozac and Ativan (lorazepam).  The combination of the two make me feel like a normal person.  Sooner or later I'll be able to go off the Ativan, though (been through this before!).  Good Luck to you and keep us up to date on how you're doing.

I'm really sorry to hear you are going through "anxiety hell", I've sure been there. I found most of the SSRI's left me anxious, painfully at times. I was on buspar for a couple of months, I didn't see any signifcant effect from that drug.  Mood swings may be an indicator of a different diagnosis, so I would just hang on if you can, the buspar might work for you and definitely the xanax. If you have anxiety, I would refrain from Prozac, that drug can cause it or amplify it, Wellbutrin is better.  Both drugs are something you can stop right away, you have to wearn off the drugs, so if it's just a temp fix, I would be careful. Those drugs take 2-4 weeks to kick in as well. Do you have a date to see the podc?
