Citalopram with herbal antidepressants OK?

Hi, went back to my meds albeit 10mg citalopram to begin with.
Can I take saffron with it?
I hear it helps a lot of the side effects.
Today before I gave up and went for my meds I had rhodiola Rosea, saffron and holy basil.
I later had a 10mg citalopram and feel OK. Felt a good bit better actually, and not just imagination.
Are these acceptable long term with citalopram. Seems to have helped.
Please advise.
Thank you
Yvonne

You can look this up by googling saffron and its contraindications.  You can also manage this stuff by buying a good herbal -- Prescription for Nutritional Healing and its companion Prescription for Herbal Healing are pretty good places to start.  If you Google citalopram, it will also list contraindications, and some sites will have herbs as well.  I don't know that saffron will be listed, though, as it's not been as commonly used as many others.  Also know that most side effects of using herbs and drugs at the same time are often theoretical, as there is little actual research done following people who use them this way -- usually it's based on theories of why the herb works which may be correct and may be incorrect.
