ECT treatment

My sister was diagnoised as manic depressive about 5 years ago. She tried to kill herself.(She is 50 years old). She has been getting ect treatments twice a month for 5 years. My questions is how long are these treaments suppose to go on? Everything I have read says only 5-6 treatments then stop. She panics when my parents ask that they try to stop them.It like she is addicted. My parents take care of her which is getting very hard since they are in their 70's. She has very little if no long term memory and does nothing for herself except dress and eat. They are thinking about putting her in a nursing home. Her doctor will not stop the treatments. HELP.
