How to cope with depression withought meds

I'm a little apprehensive about taking meds.

Are there way to alliviate some of my physical symptoms and mental as well while i wait to get on meds?

What do you do to cope?

Its getting difficult to survive the days

Dear Lula, am not selling anything to you. I have concrete experience. This is not speculation. Read the Book "Molecules of Emotions" and you will understand how brain sends messages to the body. Disturbed mind, such as people with depression have, sends wrong messages to the body. Your body becomes confused, what is what. Then you get all kinds of autoimmune problems, for example. Yes, your immune system starts to attack your own tissues. It is confused.
You need to get rid of the depression ASAP and vitamins will not help you. Therapist - yes. But it is your daily work that will be MVP of your treatment.
And remember this - doctors get paid by pharmaceuticals for prescribing their meds. May be not directly, but by gifts, lunches, dinners, etc.

TedKell, please dont sale me things and tell me if i dont go your way i'll end up with sh*t i dont have in the first place, its frustrating and insulting.

After a year break im going back to school to finish my bachelors. Ill try to see a therapist.
I've read something about vitamine B on the forum, i might try it.

I dont want to worry my family and friends anymore, i look terrible.

I partially agree with you - "It is only YOU who can save yourself. You need to work on it. You need to break patterns.". It's true. In order to beat depression for good, the work on yourself is necessary. But it is a very long way, and there are some situations where meds are necessary too. Especcialy in the beginning of treatment. I don't know anybody who coped with deep depression, suicidal thoughts and etc. without meds and psychoteraphy. But, of course, meds and psychotherapy is only beginning, we need to work on ourselves.

Lula, I feel your pain. Good news. You can do it and totally undo depression, anxiety and pain, and procrastination. Courage? Lesson 1: cost -based analysis. You can sit there for the rest of your life looking for courage. Or you can go to www.half.com and start looking for books by Albert Ellis or William Knaus. Cost: continue all your disturbances, earn yourself fibromialgia, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes or cancer. Or, start working, totally trust the system offered and start long but healing road to better life. good luck.

BloodMary, I don't think. I know. Yes psychotherapy is the way to cure depression, anxiety and box of other issues. But what is psychotherapy? The therapist teaches you how to deal with issues. It is only YOU who can save yourself. You need to work on it. You need to break patterns. And there are types of therapies out there, such as REBT, which can be self-administered. Knowledge is power. Learning psychology can make you uncover yourself and knowing yourself can help you apply appropriate therapeutic methods. I've seen people totally recovering from terrible conditions by using only self-helping methods. If I didn't know this, today I would be depressed, anxious and so on. I have many reasons for this. My knowledge allows me to stop and destroy anxiety attack within 10 minutes. It is practice of preventative treatment now as I haven't experienced one in some time. But I am capable of detecting and destroying irrational thoughts before they get to my core. It takes time but it is totally possible.

You really think the psychology knowledge is miraculous cure for depression??? It may mean that psyhologist don't suffer from depression, because they were learning psychology for years. It's not true. Any knowledge doesn't help with any illness. For depression we have to taking meds and psychoteraphy. Of course, meditation, autogenic training etc. are helping, but that are suplements and don't substitute good treatment.

Thank you all for the tips.

I've been like this for about 7 years now.
It really difficult to deal with (the lethargy, body ache and bad thoughts). I get waves of pain like an injection of poison. I've sabotaged myself too many times. I'm a compulsive eater and i've purged a couple of time

I know that at the end of the day, i'll have to go see a specialist. I just dont have the courage now. I just want to know if i can get better or make sure i dont get worst...

Learn psychology. This is the only way to cure depression. Meds don't cure - they hide the symptoms. Depression is not caused by chemical imbalances that meds working on. Depression is caused by your thoughts, patterns of thoughts. Chemical imbalance caused by your emotions, driven by those thoughts. Your thoughts can be conscious or/and unconscious. Learn psychology and you will learn great deal about yourself, you will change your thinking patterns. It takes time. May be long time. But as result, you will be happy for most of the time. Remember, nobody is 100% free of depression.
For the short term I can recommend:
-hypnosis
-autogenic training
-pranayams
-acupuncture

If you haven't been diagnosed, speak with your physician.  That's the smartest bet from the start.  

As she said, meds aren't the solution to the problem.  You normally have to go through a bit of therapy to find out exactly what it is that is causing the depression.  Once its found, it can be addressed.

As for right now without meds, there are a few things you can do to try to lessen the feelings of depression. Exercise... probably the best thing we can do for our bodies anyways.  Watch your diet and eat as healthy as you possibly can.  Drink a lot of water.  Listen to the kind of music you enjoy (unless it is all about depressing things).  And journaling... write down how you feel often.  Try to remember what you were thinking about right before you realized you didn't feel good.

Journaling often brings to light the triggers of depression.

"Healthy body, healthy mind" is not always the case but there is something to it... Watch the diet, exercise, drink lots of water, ...oh, and perhaps learn a meditation technique.

Hello and welcome!

The decision to take meds for depression is not always an easy one, many people struggle with it.

My personal opinion is, they are a great tool in the treatment of depression.  They are not a "cure all"...there is still a lot of work that needs done, usually in therapy.  But, the meds help to lift some of that depression, which kick starts your motivation.

I would strongly recommend giving it some real thought.  Talk with your doctor.  You can always try something for a while (6 months +) and see how you feel.  If you decide it isn't for you, you can ask to be tapered off.  What exactly is your concern with meds?  Is it just one of those things where you don't want to have to take something for depression?  Or, do you have other concerns.

Therapy really is a must either way, but if you're not going to try meds, it's even more important, and you may require more of it.  A lot of treating depression is about what WE do also.  We have to push ourselves, even when we don't want to, or feel like we can't.

Can you give us a little history of yourself?  How long have you been feeling depressed?  Have you been diagnosed with depression?  What have you done thus far to address it?
