I absolutely think there can be a link in families regarding depression/anxiety.
Now whether it's nature vs nurture, combo of both, etc. I don't know.
It makes sense to me that since we now know depression has physical components and is not just mental "Pull yourself up by your bootstraps" (I hate that saying, fyi..got so tired of hearing it from people who had no idea what depression can do to a person.).
In my family, several of us have been diagnosed with depression. A few are Bipolar, most are like me, major depression with anxiety. And a couple I would venture to say have depression/anxiety and self medicate with alcohol.. "Functional alcoholics" I guess would be the term...
Regards,

Dear my young heart,
So monkey see, monkey do? My mom & step dad are both functioning alcoholics. I think maybe years ago people self medicated with booze.
My 1/2 brother is a drug addict in a band. He suffers horrible depression but does not drink.
My other 1/2 brother drinks a lot , is a workaholic & type a personality.
I had a different father. A full blown Alcoholic who could only work when he was completely sober. He had tons of manic swings, where he would create huge successful businesses only to lose everything on the way down.
I was not raised with him, & didn't see him till I was 16. I am just like him ,
Except I don't drink. Maybe a 1//2 glass wine. That's it.
I know this is only one family. I'm just wondering how the brain works.
Good morning, you know this topic has been in the news alot lately,
and the best answer I found is that if you are asking about things genetic like eye color, hair color, etc, the answers lately have been No.
But what happens with depression is that it can have family connections, the grandparents were depressed, the children saw how to deal with stress and disappointments, and then when they become your parents, we learn how to deal with stress and life in the same way....But current research has not uncovered a Depression Gene, though some mental and emotional illnesses like schizophrenia can be and likely are genetic.
