concerns re: serotonin syndrome in a prozac/buspar combo...

hello,

i don't have psychiatric supervision to speak of right now, so i am making use of the meds i have available from past doctors only because i have ceased to function.

i am taking 80 mg fluoxetine plus 45 - 60 mg buspirone and i was wondering if there is reason for concern about serotonin syndrome with such a cocktail at those dosages.  if it's a bad idea to be taking so much of the both of them, it's not necessarily a big deal for me to d/c them as i still lay in bed all day! -- but what's next?

thanks...

You shouldn't be making these decisions, why wont you go to a doctor ?

If you had something else wrong you would go to a Doctor, did you have a bad experience, if so find a better one

salute!  no none of these meds we're discussing are about to reach their expiration date -- last i read.

you are probably right.  the french tend to be right.  since i can't perform most ADLs, even, right now at least, i'd probably stick with 80 fluoxetine and maybe just take 15 or 10 buspirone.  this doesn't sound unreasonable according to my own knowledge.  buspirone really does boost antidepressant response even though it makes me lightheaded for a bit.

i have to go to get the results of my lithium and tsh levels at the local hotel dieu so i can run the whole sit past the hospitalist and see what they have to say re: prozac/buspar/lithium/blah blah blah/SS/etc., ect., etc.

take good care!

I would be more concerned about the expiration date on your medications. Please check the date and don't take any expired meds.

Yes you are prone to serotonin syndrome as both are serotonergic. You should reduce both your fluoxetine and buspirone dosage to play it safe but don't break any capsules (I think Prozac is in capsules and you should never open a capsule). I think the Buspar is in tablets so its okay to break in half.

Anyway the thing you should do is go see a doctor as soon as possible but for now I would reduce dosage until you see a doctor to avoid any serotonin syndrome since you doses are pretty high.
