prozac usually begins to have a therapeutic effect anything from 3-6 weeks depending upon the severity of the depression, lifestyle choices and other stresses. Hopefully you and those around you may begin to notice an improvement.  just be easy with yourself during this time and hopefully you will find yourself less distressed and struggling.
fingers crossed

It takes a long time to see if an anti depressant is working about a month.  So you need to give them that amount of time unless your dr says otherwise or you have a bad reaction to them.

Things like Xanax can help while you are waiting for them to work or if you have a especially bad day.  I was on Valium for a long time and I think it works very similar to Xanax it helped when I was freaking out but I could not do much after I calmed down besides sleep.

I quit taking it because for me it had some weird effects the first one is quite common I think.  It made me totaly black out.  I would take it and go about my day and then have no memory.  Like I would forget I had called people and when they told me I would still not remember.(I was on a very small dosage)

It also increased my anxiety after a few months of use and my dr said that is uncommon.

goodluck

By looking at your history of posts, it sounds like your family doctor is putting you on quite a few meds. Chantix, from experiences of two folks I know, it shouldn't be used if someone has depression and/or bipolar disorder. I really recommend, if you don't have a psychiatrist, get one. I would be really reticent to take that med with the ones you are going onto. You've only been on the prozac for 2 1/2 weeks, it takes a bit longer like 4-6 weeks, and you should start to see improvements, if you don't - you may have a different diagnosis, hence get in to see a pdoc asap.

Prozac is an anti-depressent. If its not working there are other anti-depressents that could be added or it could be changed. Speak to your psychiatrist about that. As for Xanax its a short acting anti-anxiety med meant for occasional use. There are other anti-anxiety medications that being longer acting have far less of a potential for a person to build up a tolerance to such as Klonopin (which I've been on 10 years without a problem). But all this is within your psychiatrist's judgment so have an informed conversation with them.
