All over itchiness 3rd week postpartum

I had a baby 3 weeks ago and just over the last couple of days I have experienced this terrible itching! It started in the outer genital region, and I couldn't stop, it  was so itchy it almost hurt. Now my whole body itches all over-- hands, head, arms, legs, everywhere. I have been treated recently with macrobid for a bladder infection and took a single dose of More Milk Plus. My urine is a dark color too, and I have no rashes, bumps or dry skin, but very, very itchy! Please help.

I have the rash/hives on both cheeks, very itchy, red, bumpy and is spreading, and its hot. I have no fever. I started taking Macrobid Yesterday for my UTI. I am already allergic to another anti biotic called levaquin, it swelled my tongue. Now this is happening! Very irritating and unconfortable. I am not taking another dose til I can call my Dr in the morning!! This forum helped me tremendously!

Hi,
This could be an allergic reaction to the Macrobid called hives.
It is listed as one of the possible side effects of the drug. Vaginal itching and discharge is also a listed side effect as also rust or dark colored urine.

Hives are red, itchy welts or swellings on the skin that often come in clusters. Hives can appear anywhere on the body, cropping up either in one small area or covering large patches of skin. They most often occur as part of an allergic reaction.

Sometimes you will not notice the skin manifestations of the allergy ie. the rash will be absent but you will experience the assosciated sensory response, which is the itching.
The itching may continue to appear until the condition resolves, which will be till the drug is cleared from the body.

When an irritant comes into contact with your body, your immune system sends chemicals, including histamine, to fight it. The sudden spike in histamine levels can cause an outbreak of hives/itching  in the upper layers of the skin.

Any drug can touch off an allergic reaction, although allergies to penicillin, sulfa, and aspirin are especially common.
If the itching was of  sudden onset and spread quickly after you took the medication.  means that you've probably developed an allergy to that drug.

Stop taking it and inform your doctor who may want to substitute it with another drug.
For the itching oral anti-histamines will help.Comfort is the main goal of treatment, since most hive outbreaks are relatively minor and short-lived. To soothe itchy skin, try cold compresses, calamine lotion, a cool shower, or a tepid bath with a few tablespoons of cornstarch.
