Eyelash/Hair loss

Hi there, I've been losing eyelashes more than usual. I also, have had hair loss as well more than usual. Both do not come out in clumps or patches. I do not take any medications. I am 25. I do not puck them out myself. I know its susceptible that a person could be denying this but i don't rub or pluck hairs from my head or eyelashes. When I find my eyelash hair it's like a foreign object in my eye and to my horror its ANOTHER eyelash... My hairs I find several(5-7) strands each night on my bed..

I notice that the loss is more frequent after my use of a facial cleanser with SLES (sodium laureth sulfate) in it. I realized that my shampoos have this or SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) in it as well.
Could they be a cause to my hair loss? When I use the cleanser I pay special attention to avoid my eye area.

I also have been stressed due to some school situations. I don Not find the urge to pick my hairs or rub though.. or even itch. i usually get just back pain.

I have noticed I've been having hormonal pains in my breast 2 x in a month this past month and 1/2.  Could it be hormonal changes?

Check out the Demodex mite which live in the hair follicles.  It can become over active, especially if the immune system is stressed.  It can cause hair loss or a rash.  Tea tree products can help with this problem.

Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.

I can understand your concern and according to National Toxic Encephalopathy Foundation, sodium lauryl sulfate is an important ingredient of shampoo which can cause hair loss.  However losing 5-7 strands of hair per day is not termed as hair loss. It is normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day.  If you are having excessive hair loss from scalp and eyelashes, other important causes like telogen effluvium should be ruled out.

Stress and hormonal imbalance are important causes for hair loss. Because of stress you may be absentmindedly rubbing your eyes or pulling eyelash hair which may be causing hair fall from eyelashes.

Eat a healthy diet containing more of green leafy vegetables, Selenium, zinc and magnesium are some of the minerals that your hair needs and also amino acids and vitamin E will help in growing hairs. Also rinse the shampoo well. If the symptoms persist then get it evaluated from a dermatologist.

Hope that this information helps and hope that you will get better soon.

Wishing you good health.
