Hi,

How old are you?

Sun exposure is the more common culprit for cases of facial discolorations. These include freckles and age spots. They may appear as dark spots over the face and other sun exposed areas of the body. Another differential is melasma which usually occurs in pregnancy. Thus, your sex is important here and your age. Women may also present with darkish discolorations over the face as they age. This may not be something urgent but their presence may cause discomfort.
Have you been pregnant before?
Also, is there anyone in the family with a similar condition?

Other differentials will be a reaction of the skin to frequent use to facial creams, lotions and certain cosmetics. This may be true if a history of allergies runs strong in the family.

Hi

How would you describe the discoloration?

For young women, facial discolorations may be common usually as a result of previous inflammatory skin conditions like acne. The discoloration may also be due to a yeast infection or it may be secondary to a photosensitivity reaction. Hormones may also cause some changes in the skin. Prolonged sun exposure without sunscreen protection may cause hyperpigmentation.

Apply sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 generously over the face when staying outdoors. A Vitamin E cream may help soften and smoothen the skin. Whitening creams my be abrasive.Just continue to observe the skin. If this does not improve ,then other forms of therapy like microdermabrasion and even Laser therapy may be able to help.

I'm 44 and I suddenly have a discolored area that looks like a mustache.  It's not hair,my hair is very thin and alsome invisible.  I don't smoke and I've been on birth control for over 20 years.  It's like there are very minute wrinkles there.  When I look up close and stretch the skin it looks fine.  What causes this and what can I do about it?
