Hydrocortizone on Penis - Skin Thinning and Discoloration

Hi,

About 3 weeks ago i developed a rash on the underside of my penis, just beneath the glans.  I already have somewhat thin skin on my penis and I am circumsized.  The rash then flaked and eventually went away.  I saw a dermatologist who said that it was not a yeast infection, but that it might be something like dry skin and general irritation due to sex.  I have never had any irritation like this before during sex, and I have been sexually active for about 16 years.

The GP I saw before I went to a dermatologist said that I should get some over the counter cream for dermatitis or to try to get some hydrocortizone.  So I basically applied hydrocortizone ointment to my penis for about 7-8 days.  I did put a bit much on the shaft and glans of my penis.

I stopped putting the ointment on 10 days ago.  My penis has since had a slight loss of pigmentation on the shaft, meaning it is now slighltly "pinker" or ligher in color, AND the skin appears to be thinner.

This was an OTC 1% hydrocortizone cream called Hydrozole.  I only used it for about 7-8 days.  I read that use of hydrocortizone can cause this, but it takes 2-4 weeks of overuse, which I did not do.  Regardless, I have noticed that I developed the side effects of over use.

So, my question is, will my penis skin "toughen" and get back to normal, or am I already looking at permanent damage?  I am very nervous and scared about this.

I am currently abstaining from sex and masturbation for the next month to see if my skin repairs itself.  PLEASE, anyone with experience with this give me some insight.

Thanks!

Seems that your penis is looking the same (thin and transparent skin), because you are paying so much attention to it. Just leave it alone, your skin is healing everyday little by little Trust me, it will be the same as before. I understand that you are anxious, but let me tell you, my condition was way worse than yours and now I have a penis that looks healthy and feels healthy. Just relax my friend, you are gonna be ok soon.

yeah. I used hydrocortisone 1% on the tip of my penis for nearly two months to treat some psoriasis in 2011 (which was stupid). It now being 2013. Let me tell you, it takes years my man. But the sensitivity and stuff will go away. The skin will just look wrinkly and uneven (I'm guessing this is the permanent part). But it will definitely get better. The skin gets thicker. There really is no such thing as 'permanent' (like forever) skin thinning. The skin will thicken and get most of its elasticity back as the lower layers push through the dead upper layers of skin. It may just heal unevenly, but the skin will be 'healthy' and as thick as it once was. It just takes a long time. Since I'm a couple years down the road, I'll tell you that you're the only one who's going to be able to notice the effects of the damage.

I used hydro cream in Feb.  For about a week.  All looked good. However. I master bated a few days later. Glans went different colour where skin had rubbed.  Stopped using. Master bated a few more times over the days. Skin cracked. Was dry and sore. Bled at one point in one spot. Knew something up then.

Started using lube. Head was red where skin was thinking but redness was slowly going and shrinking in size.  However felt I hadn't used hydro cream properly. So used again in pea sized amounts . Noticed wrinkly skin when soft. And shiny,  red , smooth skin with capillaries showing when erect. If I masturbated I gave it a day rest or washed it thoroughly to lose residue of hydro.  Now I've stopped using hydro but issues still there. Thin skin etc.

I plan to not use it ever again. And hopefully return to normal asap and not panick about it too much. Will use lube when i masturbate.

Sex is off the cards. I've lost my gf due to this too. Bastad useless cream for penis issues.  Well for mine it was anyway.  Some sore marks from friction. I wouldn't suggest using it if u have friction marks. Ask for something else.  Something to heal instead of reduce swelling. Don't use this cream is my advice.

All its gave me after about 2 weeks on and off of using it , is thin skin on my penis head. Transparent in places when soft and I start to masturbate. And if it's erect it has red capillaries showing around Base of penis head. Has a shiny, smooth appearance.

I will keep u all updated with my progress. One tip is defo to use lube if you're going to masturbate and also cut down on masturbation.  Let it heal.

Guys, I found a cream which might be helpful for these kind of skin issues. It's called Banival, contains hyaluronic acid, vitamin E and other components which help the skin recover. I am already using it for a month, so hopefully it will speed up the process.

Hi Ara62,
Yes, my skin is much better and a dermatologist confirmed me that there is huge progress compared to 6 months ago and almost no atrophy. Even if it still visually doesn't look as it was at the affected places, that doesn't really matter, since the functionality is ok.
I am posting below my comment from a few months ago regarding what I did, apart from Banival and had a really good progress:
"I went to a dermatologist a couple of months ago and she prescribed me a drug called Piascledine (containing avocado oils) for 2 months and apart from the cream Banival I was already using, also Terproline EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor). I am drinking collagen sometimes, but the doctor said she is not sure if it reaches there where it is needed (I guess because of not too much research on the collagen supplements for skin, but still collagen doesn't really have any side effects, as far as I know).
Based on research on the internet before, I have found that protopic (tacrolimus) and ammonium lactate might cause thickening of the skin and the doctor confirmed that this is possible (it is actually a side effect of protopic), but since there are other potential side effects, she didn't prescribe those to me. Anyway, I can see an improvement from where I was before, so the healing process is ongoing.
I also occasionally get redness, but I don't see a correlation with friction, it just shows for a day and then later on disappears. I suppose that is because the capillaries are messed up by the corticosteroid (betamethasone) and based on what I read about it, it would take quite some time to go back to normal."
On top of that I have been eating more healthy and including regularly vitamin C (from oranges) and avocados which are really good for the skin. Currently I am taking also vitamins for the skin, called Perfectil.

Same reply as donkey Kong gave 5 years ago. It does rethicken and mostly look the same but you can expect some wrinkles. And in my case some pinkness from the dilated blood vessels underneath the glans skin, which show more because of skin discolouration.

I'm nearly two years down the line and would agree with donkeykong. It does take years and who knows where it ends up. I used it for 2 and a half months on and off. Mostly fine but it's still repairing and his point about skin layers pushing to the surface when replaced makes a of sense. An online Dr said it can take 5 years.

I'm 2 years in nearly. It does rethicken and mostly looks normal except some dry skin where it's repairing the layers, and some red or pinkness as described before.

Hydrocortisone 1% cream is a mild cream. Not mild to moderate. Who knows how things end up but as stated already. It does improve.

Been having the same problem since 2009. Translucent mucous membrane, discoloration, broken blood vessels, etc. I've been on the 'alternative' route for a few months now. I've seen improvements lately using colloidal copper. Both topically and orally. My naturopath recommended it. Also food-wise by eating lots of fish oil caps seems to have made the skin thicker. Same for a high quality vitamin-mineral pack.

Wonder eat happened to amos.  I'm 35 weeks in since using this poison. Things have improved dramatically.  Every now and then , if there's a lot of action down there I get a little redness. But that's getting better and better with time too. Have had infections as time as gone on but less and less so. Due to thinned skin. But this is thickening all the while. All I get now really is capillaries showing under the flash of a camera and also occasionally slight cigarette paper skin is starting to get erect.

Alright guys the exact same thing has happened to me. My DR got me to use 1% Daktacort back in May 2013 on my penis and I got a red, shiny patch on the right of my penis shaft (It varied from being bright red to pale white).

It seemed to go away but then I shaved my groin June 2016 and got dry flakey skin. So as I still had a tube of cream left over I thought I'd better use it again... BIG MISTAKE... this is how I know it's the Daktacort... the shiny red patch has appeared again on the right hand side of my shaft along with a NEW patch up the middle. It is bright red and shiny as we speak.

I would strongly advise people not to use this cream.

I'm going to refrain from masturbation to help it heal I'll keep you updated.

Let's get through this guy's and hopefully stop it happening to others.

Yep.  Good thinking.  Let it rethicken.  And protect it whilst fragile.  It takes the apparently.  So be patient also.

Any updates? I have the same problems. Used the cream and caused thinning of the skin which i am concerned is permanent.

I have stopped masturbating as this definitely irritates it and i think to give it any chance of healing it needs complete rest and moisturising.

When you have a sprained ankle you don't run on it right?

Having read a few posts on here it's good to hear that there's other of people who say it all returns to normal. But I guess it just takes time. For me personally.  I'm. Never using these creams again. No way.

From what I can tell people are saying let it heal. It will return to its former thickness. Masturbate less in the meantime.  It could take a while. A year or two perhaps. But be strong and believe.  Treat it well. Some even say use coconut oil , or hypo allergenic cream to help heal it. Sister your Dr and ask from kind of healing cream. Moisturise it.

For me I will defo keep u updated. Fingers crossed for all of us. Surely this cream should banned from being used on penis skin or any thin skin.

Hello
I'm 27 years old. I'm having this problem for more than one year, but it just happened suddenly on my penis shaft in the middle (above and below circumcision scar). Dermatologist and urologist said there is nothing. All STD tests was negative. I'm not married and I've never had sex. Dermatologist prescribed an anti-fungal ointment and an antibiotic pills, but it did nothing. The skin is very delicate, smooth, thin, touchy, shiny and blood capillaries are visible. Very sensitive to touch with hand (cold hand is much worse) or cold water drops or even friction with new growing pubic hair, it is very painful.
What to do? My life is ruined and don't know what might happen when I get married.
Please help

I have been through hell with this situation now for about a month or so.
I tend to think that the extreme stress from the situation only makes it worse. I will say that the use of Extra Virgin Coconut oil has seemed to help and I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be my old self soon.

I wish I had seen this before applying that ointment. I just used it for 5 days and the skin of my shaft freaks me out (transparent, veins popping out, shiny).
I was recommended this to alleviate the scar of my circumcision. Bad idea.

So nobody has fully recovered?

I have to agree with Donkeykongking as thats what I have experienced myself but likely the burning sensstion declined after few months however the uneveness color never improved!! I assume this is permanent, as for thickness it have returned and the severe burning disappeared........ Beach, sunlight helped me improve this

I had the same issue, but my trouble is too sever because I am having depressions on my glans because of friction during the sexual intercourse and lots of scars and deep cracks.
I am desperated because I am with this trouble over 1 year and it becoming worse each day.
You believe may be reversible? I am depressed and desperate!
Let's keep in touch!

I had the same issue with those kind of creams and after sex my skin was ripping apart on the glans and the foreskin... It was so thin that sometimes I was retracting and at the same time I was damaging the glans skin because it was so thin that was stuck with the foreskin... So I decided to keep it retracted all the time and that really helped me, lot of discomfort at the beginning but later on I was almost coming back to normal. Now, I still have some issues but hopefully I will return stronger... take care

Well i've had the same symptoms, but with my eyelid that I used hydrocortisone on... It's been two months for me and i've used nothing but moisturizer... It seems that the skin thinning hasn't 'thickened' up yet.
