Skin Problems

I am having a problem with my hands they seem to lose pigmentation and have sores almost like burns that will not heal. Everytime i just happen to hit my hands or go in my pockets anything causes my skin to bleed form a wound itch and will not heal. If it does heal i lose pigmentation on them.  Someone said this is from sun but have not been out in sun and this continues to happen.  Please help i walk around with bandaids on my hands all the time.

Im suffering from dermographism from past 7 months..which was earlier diagnosed as urticaria ..
right now I hav reduced mine dose of Atarax from 25 mg daily to 5 mg alternate days.
the vigorosity of itching has reduced but still it remains and the skin shows clear lines on slight
strokes made by fingernails... since the last 3 months Im getting Homeopathy treatment..
Please tell me if there are any test to determine the actual cause of this disease andalso  is it safe
to continue Atarax for so long

I have problems sweating too much ! And it's embarrasing. I'm a cheerleader and everything. Nobody else that I know sweats that much, not even in my family. I'm not overweight or underweight I'm just right for my size, but it's only been a problem for about 3 to 4 years. I need help without surgery or something!

You should be tested for porphyria (and not all tests are conclusive most are symptomatic diagnosis).  Your condition sounds just like my husbands, he was diagnosed in 1983 and our doctor said it was a mis-diagnosis.  We ignored it for 15 years, and had several acute attacks since then.  When the sun don't shine you are probably very comfortable.  Try taking Milk Thistle, it has made a remarkable difference in his skin, except we went on a cruise to Mexico, and trying to get it in control again.  Getting it diagnosed will be a problem.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
James:

Every scab or traumatized area will leave the skin looking discolored, often for a long time.  First the color is reddish, then it settles to a brownish color which, again, can be long lasting.

I know of few if any skin diseases which causes the hands to behave the way you describe.  Either you have a very traumatic life, or else you're picking at yourself or scratching away scabs, consciously or not.

To ruke out some rare form of skin fragility, you ought to see a dermatologist, who can look at your skin, and if necessary test your blood and urine to try to uncover an explanation.  The most likely on, though, is that you are scratching yourself out of self-consciousness.

Please let me know what you find out.  You needn't go around indefinitely with bandaids on your hands.

Good luck.

Dr. R
