Mollscum on a 10 yr old

My son was told he had mollscrum 2 weeks ago, it is mulitiplying.  It looks to have doubled in the last 2 weeks.  He has started to scratch it.  What makes it mulitiply.  We put liquid band-aid on it tonight.  It that a good idea.  The doctor's office is saying 3 months before we can see a dermatologist.  I am afraid he will be covered by then.  Also I read that this can last 5 yrs.  Is that so?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,

Molluscum contagiosum  is caused by a virus which can be passed on by skin-to-skin contact or by touching things that have been contaminated by the virus.Once one area of skin is affected the rash can spread to other areas. After being infected with the virus, the mollusca or warty bumps develop 2-8 weeks after. Each molluscum lasts about 6-12 weeks, crusts over, and then goes. However, new ones tend to appear as old ones are going as the virus spreads to other areas of skin. It commonly takes 12-18 months before the last of the mollusca goes completely.

To reduce the chance of passing it on to others, it is advisable not to share towels, clothes soft toys, or bathwater. Also, try and avoid skin-to-skin contact with other people  and encourage your son not to scratch the mollusca as this may increase the risk of spreading the rash to other areas of the skin. It is contagious until the last molluscum has gone.It is usually best not to treat, particularly in children, because the rash will go away even without treatment.  Many of the treatments can be painful and some has a risk of burning the surrounding skin.  Take care and regards.
