My 3 year old daughter and I were diagnosed (under the microscope) with scabies 3 weeks ago. My daughter contracted it from her preschool. We used Elimite, washed and cleaned everything, and then used Elimite again 7 days later. We used the Elimite 7 days later because we both felt the intense itch again and had new red bumps. Then a week later, after my daughter returned to school, we both got new red bumps again & were directed to use the Elimite again! Since the 3rd application, my daughter has had very few visual signs and no itching. I however, have yet to stop itching (except the nights I use the Elimite & the next day or so after). My visual signs have yet to stop as well. I have continued to get new bumps and new zig zag lines, but they only appear for a 1/2 a day to a day, then they will go away, then new ones will appear, and stay for a day or so, and so on . I have been told by some doctors that the new visual signs mean that the scabies is back and other doctors have said that new bumps and lines will continue. Which is true???? And, why can't I stop itching when it has been so long???? Do I need to use something other than the Elimite? Or, are we continuously re-contracting this from my daughter's school, or from something that I have not cleaned enough?? I have read on this forum that scabies only live an hour off of warmth, but the public health nurse in our county said they can live in the carpet. My last question is, are we safe to have pyhsical contact with others because orginally we infected several people. PLEASE ADDRESS EACH OF MY 5 QUESTIONS!!!!!

She was admited to the emergency room when the scratching got out of hand. Since then we have cleaned her apt with clorox, along with my home. Washed all of our clothes and sheets.
The Dr perscribed her with a toxic cream. Ever since she has applied the cream no new bumps and the scratching stoped. I
do not think I have gotten the scabies even though i have slept in the same bed with her. What I have done for myself is bathed in hot water and just bought Lice R Gone. I never had the itches and do not have bumps on my body; could I be imuned to them? I do not feel that this is an emergency so I do not want to visit the ER. Also I do not have health insurance; but should I go to a dermitoligist for the cream to make sure? A response on what I should do is greatly appriciated.

I found it appalling that you've been summarily dismissed by the "M.D." on this site. Therefore, I was compelled to respond to your post.
I have had personal expereince with what was supposed to be scabies, which never seemed to go away. For years. You're not crazy.
I do agree with the idea that you may've been misdiagnosed though, because I have read and been told told by numerous Drs. that it is extemely difficult to diagnose scabies under the microscope, because scabies is a type of microscopic mite. As such, the likelyhood of actually *catching* one with the skin scrape is not very good. Usually the organism has moved on from the site where the symptoms are by the time they take the test. Therfore, most doctors will prescripe a topical rx based on symptomology.
Do you have any pets in the house? THe possiblily exists that you could've been re-infested by an animal. Some mites which said to not be contagious to or from animals, can live for a short duration on an animal or human. So if I bring home mites I could give them to my dog, but they will not survive on my dog (if they are *human* mites) for longer than two weeks but that doesn't mean that Fido can't give them back to me before they die off, after I've applied my Elimite.
The fact that your daughter remains asymtomatic is good, it shows that she has a stong immune system.
Different people have different predispostions to types of ailments. Do you tend to get skin irritations easily or contact dermitis? If so, this could also help explain why your symptoms keep returning. Particularly, if you're no longer passing it on to other people.
A home remedy that may work for you is to apply some diluted vinegar to the effected area for a week. Mites can only live within a narrow pH range and the scid from the vinegar is enough to kill them. Also, it should help to alleviate the redness. burning or stinging. (It works great on sunburns to remove the heat and sting)

Your public health nurse is not correct. I am in fact skeptical of the diagnosis to begin with, because you contract scabies from intimate physical contact, not from schools or places of work. In any case, Elimite is extremely effective, so much so that the persistence of itch argues against its having been scabies in the first place. Why are you still itching? Perhaps because you have applied Elimite repeatedly. Perhaps because you are thinking about having bugs crawling in your skin.
Scabies "burrows" are very tiny, and occur mainly in the finger webs. I doubt that the "zig zag lines" you describe are anything more than scratch marks, not persistent scabies.
Cleaning has nothing to do with scabies, since scabies do not come from dirt. In fact, too much washing increases irritation, not to mention anxiety.
My advice? Ignore visual signs. Apply a topical itch lotion (Benadryl, Sarna--both OTC) as needed for itch. Do not wash too much or re-wash your clothes and wardrobe. Forget about scabies.
