Severe Cystic Acne w/ Medicinal Allergies

I have severe cysitc acne that covers my upper back.  I went to a dermatologist for this condition beginning at age 12.

During the course of treatment I was perscribed Minocycline, Doxycycline, tetracycline, and sulfa based medications, all resulting in allergic reactions.  I was finally placed on Accutane with positive results while taking the drug, however six months after completing treatment, the acne returned again.  A year later I resumed taking Accutane, unfortunately, with the same results.

At 18, I began a homeopathic course of treatment which consisted of taking a variety of vitamins each day. But, I saw no changes in my skin.  My hormone levels were also tested, and came back within the normal range.

My question now is, are their any other options for clearing my acne?  Thank you for any assistance.

Hi.

Severe forms of acne are usually treated with retinoids which was used in your case. However, retinoids have their side effects and there are several if you try to read about them. In cystic or nodular acne, you may have to take oral medications. Also ask your doctor if surgical removal or intralesional injection of corticosteroids may be used.

Ask your dermatologist about this and see if this may be indicated in your case. Acne may subside as one grows older.

I  have cystic acne on my face - it turned out to be allergy related.  I do not touch or use things on my face and then I do not get the cysts.  But all it takes is to wash my hands without my dove soap at a restaurant and then touch my face to realize I must have been allergic to the soap.  But then the cyst goes away fast - as long as the thing I'm allergic to isn't touching me for long - I was allergic to my hair color and the warmth color of bare minerals for example - most bronzers and foundations.
I hope this helps.
