Small bump on head suddenly hurts

I am 22 years old and have always had two small bumps (around the size of a pencil eraser) one the front, center of my head and one toward the back of my head in the center. Usually I never notice these bumps, the only time I ever knew they were there was when they sporadically itched. I would scratch them and then wouldn't notice them for a little while. More recently, I woke up to the bump on the front center of my head hurting and itching more than ever. It hurt to touch right away and has gotten progressively worse. It does not feel any bigger, but has been constantly hurting for the past 3 days. The area around it now hurts as well and I notice the pain without even touching it. It continues to itch unbearably. I have researched endlessly and found information on bumps that hurt (but nothing consistent), and none that address itching. My mother has 1 bump like mine on the top of her head (in a different spot), but has never experienced pain. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I hate to run to the doctor for something that will go away or is minor. Thank you.

Thank you for your help. I saw my family provider today because they said they could take care of the problem when I called for a dermatology referral. They prescribed 500 mg of Cephalexin Monohydrate, an antibiotic. Tonight after a long hot shower I parted my hair to look at it and some puss came out so I am thinking that is OK. No one said anything about having the cyst removed, I hope it does not cause me any more problems and at least no serious ones. I feel much better about it now though. Thank you again!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
It can be either a boil or an infected sebaceous cyst. They may occur anywhere on body but scalp, ears, back, face, and upper arm, are common sites for sebaceous cysts. Blocked sebaceous glands, swollen hair follicles and excessive testosterone production will cause such cysts.

Generally no treatment is required but they become painful then it means they are infected,  then surgical excision by traditional wide excision, minimal excision, and punch biopsy excision may be required. My sincere advice is to consult a dermatologist.
I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
