Steroid cream damage

Hi, Doctor,

I have a question about topical steroid cream use. I used a steroid cream on my chin for a fungal rash for about 4 months. My primary care provider didn't warn me that it can cause lightening of the skin! Is this permanent? I haven't been using the cream for almost 6 months now, and now that it's summer and I'm getting a tan, the white spots are very noticeable. Is there any chance this might go away???

Thanks!

I was going to see a dermatologist this summer about it (due to insurance issues, I have to wait at least a couple more months :( ). I guess I'll wait it out till then! Thanks for your help and fast response!

Hi,

Steroid medications may cause the lightening of skin with continued usage. The Skin will  regenerate and perhaps over time the skin color would become normal again. You may consult another dermatologist to advise some other applications which may be helpful. Further, you may use make-up concealer to help you with this.
