Strange mole that has not changed -- should I be concerned?

My partner has a mole on his back. It is about the size of a pencil eraser and slightly asymmetrical. It is mostly brown throughout, but has some discoloration. It is pretty flat. It stands as being a little bit darker than the other moles on his back. He is a redhead and has many different looking moles throughout his body. He has had this mole for at least as long as I have known him (2.5 years), but suspects he has had it for longer than this. It has not changed at all over the course of the past 2.5 years. I am very anxious about it and we are not able to get into a dermatologist for several months. Do you think this sounds like a cause for concern or is the fact that it has not changed at all for several years okay?
