Swollen, Itchy Hands

Randomly, my hands will start to itch and swell, and become really red.  They will only do this on the areas that scratch, not the whole hand.  My skin isn't dry, flaky, or peeling, and I can't think of anything I've recently started using to cause an allergic reaction.  This has been happening for a couple months now, and happens at least once a day.  Once they're swollen and I poke at the swollen skin, it feels like there's liquid built up underneath it. The skin hasn't broke and bled yet, just very irritated. Please let me know if you have any suggestions! Thank you...

I too had swelling hands that itched pretty bad, after doing a lot of research and going to the ER it was angioedema. I think that Drs are having a hard time finding the source because it has something to do with processed foods... just my guess but I know that a lot of wheat products are now genetically engineered such as wheat that only responds to certain insecticide. I could be wrong but it seems like a diet of fresh fruits and vegetables stops the reactions... can't hurt.... goodluck

It is in the food or maybe a sodium reaction. Mine are doing it right now. I had pork chops, canned green beans, nuked potato and a country gravey my roomie made. The flour in the gravey or too much salt? Ice cold water slows it down a lot. Also drinking a lot of water seems to slow it down. This *****.

I have been dealing with a VERY irritating situation. My hands and feet are itching extremely bad to to the point that I am crying and wanting to rip off my hands and feet! I have tried everything I know like hydrocortisone cream, dumping rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizer on them. I also have tried washing them and putting them in the tub with Epsom salts. Nothing is helping. This only occurs a few times a month. HELP! I need to know what is going on! Please tell me! What is causing this and what the problem is!

I have the same issue my right hand is worse than my left hand. Its sometimes hot with minimal bumps but very itchy. Back of my hand to my knuckles. IVe tried lotion, changing diet, avoiding things nothing seems to be working. It was at its worst when I was visiting family with a cat they were swollen, but that was 3 months ago and still itchy and havent been around a cat since. Ugh annoying!

It is angioedema and it can be triggered by a number of things.I notice I get it after working with my hands or having pressure on them.  Also it will show up when i'm under stress.  I take an allergy pill (benedryl/zyrtec, etc) with a Zantac (for heartburn, the generic brand is fine)  If you take them together it helps to relieve the body's histamine reaction.  It never fails to help me.

Ok but I was sleeping and under 0 stress. I did have 6 double stack oreos and milk @ 11pm.I really think it's food related for me.Unless watching Dr.Who at 4am is the culprit.lol
I think you are right ldg456...my hands itch and then I scratch and rub and wring over and over and over again. I think it has to do with working with my hands.  I have to wear gloves working outside pulling up grass because its the pulling pressure on my hands that make then itch.  Also if I help lift furniture it causes it to start to tingle a little later and then full blown itch and the same routine.  I have tried everything.  Ice, hot water, salt, too much to mention.  Any help please.

i went to the E.R and they told me that its the blood vessels in my hand that are holding too much blood. For example, you can put your hands above your head and watch them go back to their normal color, put them on your lap, and once again they turn bright red.

So what did they say caused it, and what to do about it

Hi,

You could be allergic to some unknown substance or this could be sweat rash or some infection or eczema or dermatitis.

Do you have any other associated symptoms?

What work do you do? Do you handle any chemicals or soaps or detergents etc?

You could wash the area several times daily and apply calamine lotion at the sites. Take oral antihistamine medications like loratadine or cetrizine for your symptoms.

Try to find out the cause of your symptoms or any factors that aggravate the rash. Consult a skin specialist for a clinical examination.

Let us know about how you are doing and what your doctor advises.

Regards.

This sounds like hand dermatitis. Please get yourself checked by a dermatologist.

Hi,  My hands do the same thing whenever they are cold.   If I walk through a freezer section of a market  or if I go out in the cold weather.  The itching is like torture.  Red welts appear also.  I don't know if it is the blood preasure meds that I'm on  or that I am just allergic to the cold.  It only started a few years ago.  I hate it!!    If you get any responses to you question,  please e-mail me at ***@****   Thanks

My mother and niece have cold urticaria.  They basically have an allergy to cold. What you describe sounds very similar.
I came onto this site to find cure for my sister-in-law, however after reading through many articles posted I realized she already has the cure.  It might not work for everyone but we believe if the irritant or cause is "cold", run under warm or higher temperature water for 2-3 minutes almost works immediately.  Is sounds crazy simple but we guess most people when swelling or itching would actually do the opposite which makes things worse.  Hope this help.
