black thread under lost toenail

My toenail had fungal infection, it started as a dark area near the cuticle, that dark area moved up and out, until all my nail became rough and finally it separated. I had to cut the dead separated nail and i saw a black thread like thing. I could shorten it but i couldnt remove it because it hurts. This black thread is moveable but it looks like it has a root. It looks like a thick brow hair, much thicker( what kind of fungus is it:((

I know exactly what you are talking about.  I have the exact same thing under each toenail that has fungus.  I had cut them very short and saw these dark hair looking strips.  Definitely not a sock fiber, it is growing into the nail.  It is some kind of fungus. I am miserable.  I have about 5 toenails with this now.  I hope you find out what it is.  I just started putting vicks vapor rub on my nails each day in hopes that it will help.  I read about it on the internet.

If you have bad toenail fungus you should look into taking oral antifungals to actually cure it.  Go to a podiatrist if you can afford to.  They also have a liquid Formula 3 you can paint on your toenails, about $40, no prescription needed.  Use antifungal powder on your feet, too, and wash your socks in hot water.  Couldn't hurt to bleach them if they are white.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
It can be due to a toenail fungus or due to a hematoma formation under the nail. What you need to do is consult a dermatologist and get a KOH examination of the skin scrapings and a biopsy done if the symptoms persist. KOH examination of the area will clarify whether it is fungal infection or not.
It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.

It may just be a sock fiber.

Treat the area and all the other nails with tea tree oil every day.  You can get rid of the fungus this way.
