clothing for nonspecific eczema

I have had eczema (unknown cause) confined almost entirely to my lower chest and abdomen for about 20 years, treated with steroid creams and moisturizers.

I know that certain clothing, particularly synthetics like polyester, and also wool, is supposedly bad for eczema.

My question:  Does this just apply for clothing in close contact with skin?   Or can I wear synthetics or wool layered over , say, a cotton undershirt or shirt with no problem?

How about down jackets?   Synthetic/wool jackets?  Do the layers underneath provide a sufficient barrier?

Thanks in advance.
