folliculitis

Dear sir/madam,

I am writing this letter to get advice and help regarding my scalp folliculitis. I’ve had this condition for the past 6 years. I’ve tried different treatments including antibiotics like Amoxicillin, erythromycin, minocycline, tetracycline, doxicycline, & ciprofloxacin each course taken for at least 6 months to 1 year.  I have also tried topical treatment like Fucidin, Mupirocin, clindamycin and gentamicin. I have tried hot compress on the scalp which gives only temporary relief of symptoms. I am also getting folliculitis of the beard area .Current symptoms include pustules all over the scalp and severe pain of the hair root area (prevents me from putting head on pillow and combing hair) .I have had 1 culture of the pustule done in India which showed that the organism was staphylococcus.(No MRSA screen done with it).My current folliculitis is worse and it seems to get worse and it seems to recur very often after a very short period of relief .(it seems to recur within 3-4 days of stopping antibiotics). So I have no option than to continue the antibiotics. I am currently using oxytetracycline antibiotic.
I am medical doctor working in uk and I have consulted various specialists across UK and India for treatment of my condition but everyone seems to give me further courses of antibiotics which only gives temporary relief. Now it seems that I have got resistant to most antibiotics .Why is this condition recurring? Since it is chronic would there be a remedy for this? With this e mail I am attaching a picture of my present folliculitis of the scalp. I am hoping I will get some answers from your side.

                                                                                                        Regards
                                                                                                        Salim

You most likely need to use an antifungal shampoo with ketoconazole.  If you have fungal folliculitis, antibiotics will make it worse. Ketoconazole shampoo used regularly usually keeps it in check.
