injury swollen lips

Any suggestions?  My son fell on tile floor, face first and bumped his upper lip, which is triple the size in the center!. Initially when it occurred yesterday morning we iced it & it appears just as swollen today.  How long will it take for the swelling to go down & should we be doing something else?

Hi!

Thank you for your response.  My son is doing  OK , no other symptoms. His lip looks  , a little less swollen. Hopefully by tomorrow the swelling will decrease more. I was told it will take 3 days for the swelling to go down. I'm so glad he did not  loosen or chip a tooth.  Thank you again..

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,

How is your son? Are there other symptoms present? You can apply a cold pack to the lip to reduce injury from the swelling. If it is not swelling anymore, no cold pack is advised. After the initial swelling, applying cold is not advised because it will reduce the blood flow to the area and slow healing. It is also important that you rest the lip. If it persists, have this evaluated by your doctor or dentist.  Take care and keep us posted.
