seborrheic dermatitis on penis

I am a 38 yr old male who has suffered from Seborrheic Dermatitis his entire adult life.  I can control rashs on my scalp and forehead reasonably well with cortisone creams and zinc shampoos.  However, my real problem is on my penis where cortsone creams, shampoos, and about anything else I have tried is only slightly effective.  The winters are paricularly bad as I experience raised red patches and extreme sensitivity all around the shaft of the penis.  I would greatly appreciate any advice you might have or if you have heard of these kinds of symptoms with many others.

Hello to all SD people. I too have been dealing with SD for years. It comes it goes. I have more creams and natural cures that seem to work for a short period of time and it's like the body figures it out and stops working. So I mix it up. I woke the other morning to it in my groin, now this morning upon waking I noticed it's on my balls and shaft!  It has me wondering?  I keep trying to cure the effect and maybe I need to get to the "cause".  Upon much searching this morning I'm thinking "candida" or "yeast".  Doing a MMS protocol, just started this morning and I'll let you know how it goes.  I plan on doing this for at least 2 weeks.  I'll check back with you in a few days to update!
Till then

Hi nb664 and Justanotherguy908. I don 't see any anti-fungal in either of your treatment plans.  Something like Clotrimazole (OTC Lotrimin Ultra) or Ketoconazole should be used to control the yeast "Malassezia".  Your skin irritation is primarily the result of metabolites that are produced by this yeast, which is growing unabated due to your over production of sebum (i.e. Seborrhea).  Corticosteroids are intended to reduce the inflammation of the skin, but it doesn't kill the yeast that's causing it, so you're fighting an uphill battle.  I would use a combination of anti-fungal and corticosteroid for acute flare ups, and just the anti-fungal for maintenance.  If there's no yeast there should be little to no inflammation or itching, and daily use of a corticosteroid will thin the skin, so it's generally not recommended for daily, long-term use.

Good Luck.

Try SebaMed body wash. It cured my rashes on chin, nose and scalp. I have not used hydrocortisone in a long time. But every 3 months I will use an alternate wash (such as dandruff shampoo to clean the face and scalp). Somehow prolonged use of SebaMed w/o alternating reduces its efficacy. It does nott hurt to try it in your groin area. Who knows if it will help?

I suffer from this for ten years until recent when I used a lotion from london, england called proskins seboreic. It has cured all my scalp and face of the  yellow, oily, crusty skin that plagued it.
Please give this try. I glad I did.

Okay, I want to post to confirm the earlier post that Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide , an anti fungal and steroid combo seems to work.

My whole life I have suffered from dandruff, but never cared much. In January 2015 I had a rash that began on my chest, similar to ring worm. I also had flaky skin behind my ears, severe eyebrow dandruff and hair line dandruff. This didn't bother me.

Then I got a spot on my glands. Obviously this made me freak out. I went to an std clinic and I was diagnosed with balanitis. I didn't tell them about my other symptoms. I was given a mild steroid that did nothing. I also tried clotrimazole that did nothing.

I went back after a week and was told it was a strong fungal infection, because I had a history of thrush and had been on antibiotics. I was given flucanozle that did nothing.

I went to my gp who gave me ketanozle . This clearer the red mark that had become somewhat legionous. I also noticed moisture made it worst and it's intensity would changed throughout the day. However the new cream would only keep it in check.

I went back to the doctors and showed him my other rashes. I had used ketanozle on parts of my chest and it seemed to improve it. I originally thought it was contact dermatitis. He said it was "fungal dermatitis" and told me to take a mild steroid with the antifungal.

All my dandruff and rashes cleared other than the penis one.

The mild steroid and antifungal mix would make it go away but a day after stopping it would return. Ketanozle would make it go away in the morning but even applying thrice a day it would usually come
Back the next.

Desperate I found this thread. I bought Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide thinking it would be a long shot. I also applied it with talc powder as I wanted to reduce oil and keep the skin dry, as this fungus loves off oil.

Two days of using the cream and I was good as new. I hate steroids so I stopped the cream just After two days. It's been  almost a week and I'm spotless. First time for more than a day after two months of this crap.

Tldr: use Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide plus talc powder.

Use a natural crystal deodorant.
Usually this is used for underarms. But it works for wetting the crystal and then wiping on your penis shaft.
This must work by killing the bacteria which is causing the inflammation
I use deo nat crystal deodorant but any similar to this one should do the same.

Also stop eating sugar. The sugar will cause the inflammation also.

great great discussion!
i have also been diagnosed with sebhorreic dermatitis on the glans.
i have it for few years. i went to few dermatologists and they all gave me cortizon creams. each time they gave me different one.
using the these creams helped as i used it. but as soon as i stopped the irritation came back.
recently i had seburea on my scalp. the doctor gave me 2.5% Selenium Sulphide shampoo.
thats the sampoo: http://www.idruginfo.com/?cat=drug&s=Sebosel
from some reason this shampoo didn't effect my scalp but really effected the SD on my pines. the irritation disappeared for long time. it has better effect then any cortizon cream i have been used.
today the irritation came back after about two months. longest period with no irritation so far. i used it today again.
ill see how it will effect on this time.

god speed, be strong! :)

Hi Guys,

I never posted anything before and English is not my native language, I have suffered from seborrheic dermatitis behind my ears inside my ears, on testicals, and the worst on the head of my penis, it was very very painful, red patches and infected bumps, I used several steroid creams, tried anti fungus creams, it was about 80% cleared, but always came back even worst than before.
The doctor kept giving my stronger steroid creams.
I searched online and ordered more then 20 different creams to try cure it without steroid creams, non has worked.
Tried to use apple vinegar and it burned like hell and it worked for few days, but it wasn't cleared completely and the penis was very irritated after sexual contact.
Also changed my diet, stopped eating dairy and ate lots of raw foods.

About 2 weeks ago, I got a product that I read good reviews:
Mario Badescu Control Cream

It changed my life, it worked in 2 days better then steroid creams for 2 weeks.
I can finally have sex without pain, I don't think anyone should suffer from this like I did.
It is a miracle, I wish I would have found it 10 years ago.

I agree that it appears fungal. My girlfriend has tinea versicolor on her back and uses Cicloporox prescription cream to clear it up. I randomly thought to try using that recently, and it is definitely working. It is a much more concentrated anti-fungal than you can get over-the-counter, which may explain why Lotrimin and others haven't worked as well for me.

Hi,

It is probably pityrosporum folliculitis what you have now.
It's a yeast.
Best remedy is to take a good probiotic orally and apply it also on the affected areas. Although I'm not sure to put it on your penis.
My rash was on my scalp, back and face. But the yeast infection you can get everywhere.
You open 3 capsules or crush 3 tablets, add a few drops of water, stir and put it on the skin. Leave it for 1 hour and rinse it off.

It helped me VERY WELL. And it didn't come back.

I had the symptomos I know the cure.

It is a three week process, but it could happen sooner for most.

LotraminUltra AF Spray
LotraminUltra Cream
Medicated Fungi Care

Process:  Spray yourself whenever it itches.  Do not do it super close to the penis it will hurt like a MOFO.  Just far away enough so you see your penis being covered with the chalky spray.

Pain goes away instantly.

Then whenever you shower, uaw the Fungi Care.  It hurts to use it, but its killing the fungus so its worth it.

Then after you get out of the shower dry completely.  Then put cream on.

Then throughout the day if it ever starts to itch, spray it with the anti-itch LotraminAF.

the scratch attacks will come less and less.  They will still wake you up, and come randomly.  But after a week, you will notice a huge difference.

Good Luck, I will check this forum if there are questions.

This is a much more refreshing topic than what the other suggestions were guiding me to...I was diagnosed with this when I thought it was herpes or something nasty of the sort.  From what I've read: herpes itches and feels irritated, whereas seborrheic dermatitis could go unnoticed if you didn't even look down there; however, having an inflamed penis after masturbation will definetly scare you enough to start reading up on it.  I had a hard time putting my finger on what the sore was, since it was fairly small, unpronounced, unirritated, and a singular mark.  I haven't read anything about herpes inflamming the penis after masturbation.  Is this sort of thing seasonal?  I live in Wisconsin, and with winter coming I seem to be drying up all over the place.  Be very grateful for this condition, because in comparison, it is the more fortunate choice (if you had to choose lol).

Damn the internet for all of the mixed sightings...I've never been so freaked out over a personal ailment before :P.

I have the same problem and have seen many dermatologists. They tell me there is no cure and Im personally trying to figure out what makes it flare up and how to keep it under control. I have been prescribed a few different steriod creams which help to some extent but i am very wary of using them as the doc says they thin your skin. Hopefully they can find a cure for this sometime soon, would much prefer not to live with this the rest of my life

Hi sayswho,
interesting reading however the cream you mention
<>
is in fact a steriod cream. That is why you can only normally get it through a medical prescription.

I have dealt with seborrheic dermatitis since I hit puberty.  I get it on my scalp, eyebrows, chin (where facial hair grows), and my penis (both the base of the shaft where pubic hair grows as well as the glans).  It presented in white flaky skin on the hair area and small red bumps and lesions on the groin area, which look very unfortunately like herpes (which I have been tested for several times and do not have).  I tried a million different OTC creams and such and did a crazy amount of online searching, but no one seemed to know how to fix it.  I finally asked a doctor about it, and was extremely fortunate to find one who has seen this many times before.  I was delighted to find that, although there is no cure, there actually is a treatment that works almost perfectly, AND is non-steroidal.  It is a prescription-only cream called "Nystatin and Triamcinolone Acetonide".  You have to tell your doctor about it specifically, because many of them have never heard of it before.  My mother has a similar skin disorder (it is generally known in the medical community that this disorder is genetic, or at least runs in families), and she went to several doctors and spent over a thousand dollars on specialists, to no avail.  Once she found that this cream worked great on me, she specifically mentioned it to her doctor, who actually had to look it up right there because she had never heard of it before.  After all those specialists and all that money, it took two applications of this $8 bottle of cream and she was good as new again.  Typically, I only need to apply this cream one or two times during flair-ups and the problem is gone for several months before it returns again.  Please, please, please mention this to your doctor and give it a try.  I understand what you all are going through and it is absolute hell.  This was essentially my "cure"!  Let me know if this worked for you.

ya it does bother me at night.  Just last night it kept me up.  So frustrating.  Gets depressing knowing I'll have to deal with it the rest of my life.  This summer its been flaring up quite a bit...I live in a very HOT and HUMID climate.  For the majority of you guys it sounds like the dryness is what causes flare-ups but for me it's completely the opposite.  The winters are best for me and summers are worst for me.  I enjoy going to the pool or lake but all that does is seem to aggravate it more.  Im going to go back to my derm and see if she can prescribe cicloprirox olamate.  It's supposed to be better than ketaconazole.

er, i meant to say, "i've read that the condition tends to flare up *in the winter* for a lot of people who have this condition in their scalp, something to due with the humidity change and the air being drier in the winter."  both times this has bothered me, it has started when the first real cold spell came in.

i have also been diagnosed with sebhorreic dermatitis on the glans.  it started last year around mid november, continued through early-mid may, then disappeared for the entire summer.  i was never bothered once by it from mid-may until, once again, mid-november.  i've read that the condition tends to flare up for a lot of people who have this condition in their scalp, something to due with the humidity change and the air being drier in the winter.  i'm only guessing that's what has caused mine to flare up, because nothing else has changed.  i use ketaconazole cream twice a day to try to keep it in check.  so far this winter, it isn't terrible, i seem to remember last year being worse, but then... it just started two weeks ago, so it might get bad yet.

typically, it starts burning/aching after urinating and, to a lesser extent, masturbating.  sex never seemed to bother it particularly.  the  redness is pretty strictly confined to the tip of my penis, though last year the redness did spread as far back as halfway up the head of my penis.  generally, though, the only irritation/burning i feel is at the very tip.

do any of you ever have trouble sleeping because of the condition?  that's really the only issue i have with it - it's irritating during the day, but not exactly what i would call painful.  but occasionally at night (last year as well as once so far this year) it has been enough to keep me from getting to sleep.
