skin infection?

I have developed these spots on the top of my feet. I am very concernd, they appear to be redish in color and started off in very small patches and are now spreading all over the tops of my feet and also around my ankles and toes now as well. I have had them for a couple yrs now and they are getting worse. Not only do I have the spots but the coloring of my skins around them is somewhat yellow brown. I dont know what they are but they started a couple yrs ago and I have never seen anything like it????

they do not itch, they almost appear to be blood spots, they are very small, flat and do not really bother me. The main thing I am concerned about is if it is something that is unhealthy. See my mother is a diabetic and has Lupus so I worry these could be some signs?? They started years ago and are now getting worse.

Hi

There can be various causes for reddish spots on the ankles and feet. The common ones are scabies, eczema, lichen planus, psoriasis, fungal infection (tinea pedis), erythema multiforme, dyshidrotic dermatitis, etc.

Lichen planus lesions are discrete, individual lesions of 1 to 2 mm in diameter or larger, coalesced lesions of 4 to 5 mm in diameter. Typically, the lesions are polygonal, purple, itchy papules. They involve the wrist and forearms, anterior aspect of the lower legs, ankles and dorsum of the hands and feet and lumbar area. Sometimes they may present as non-itchy yellowish papules that usually lack the typical morphological characteristics.

You have not mentioned whether the lesion is itchy or not?

The diagnosis in skin disorders can be done only by looking at the rash.  Sometimes a skin biopsy may be done to help confirm the diagnosis.

You should consult a dermatologist who may prescribe you some topical anti-fungal medication. If however, he thinks it is due to some other conditions like psoriasis or lichen planus, he may advise appropriate treatment like steroid cream.
In the meantime you may try an over-the-counter antifungal cream like 1% clotrimazole. You should also maintain hygiene of the involved areas.

Take care
