Can my kidneys do this?

Hi. I'm a T1 Diabetic with foot drop in my right foot. I also have kidney disease. Recently, I started smoking again, and now my foot is in agonizing pain and it's swelling up like crazy. I wasn't too worried, because usually BOTH feet retain fluid when my kidneys are on the fritz, but the pain is getting worse and worse. Ironically, my blood sugar has been dangerously low, as opposed to its usual highs. Is there any connection?

Hi,
I tried to answer you yesterday, but somehow the response didn't get through.

You need to go see your Dr.  What you are describing is not good.

Smoking restricts the blood vessels in your feet and legs.  So does chronic high blood sugar (foot drop is a sign of this).  So the fact that you are swelling could mean that there are major circulatory problems.  To put it bluntly, these can end in amputations.

So, please go see your Doctor asap and get checked out.  Please stop smoking.

The lows could be for many reasons, but your symptoms must not be ignored.

Please come back and tell us how your are.
