Marriage & Diabetes

My fiancee is diabetic. I am not that disturbed. But would like to know the consequence of the disease on childbirth and the implication for our children born of diabetic parent. Are our children likely to get the disease?

I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 14.  I am now 58 and have 3 grown kids and 4 grandkids.. none have any sign of type 1... I had no problem giving birth and was told they would induce labor early so they babies would not be too big.. If she takes care of her self she can live a long and healthy life... R

Agreed. As long as her diabetes is under control and she is under the care of a physician there should be no problem having babies. Type 1 diabetes has been linked to genetics but it is far less of a percentage then say Type 2.

Even if a person has the genetic susceptibility for type 1 diabetes the disease will not occur without a trigger.

The number also goes down if the diabetic parent is the mother. Children of diabetic fathers have a higher risk of inheriting the disease.

All in all, I've never met a type 1 diabetic who had a type 1 diabetic parent. It's pretty rare.
