I am a type I diabetic and had my son last January. He is perfectly healthy. I kept my A1C between 5.4 and 5.9 for 6 months before and during my pregnancy. I also had to check blood sugars at least 8 times a day. I had a lot of tests done during my pregnancy to ensure that my baby was developing properly. It is a lot of work but well worth it. I would also recommend seeing an endocrinologist before thinking about getting pregnant and making sure you have a team of OB/GYN docs in your area that deal with high risk pregnancies especially pregnany women with type 1 diabetes.

Haley Berry just had a baby!  She is a type 1, 40 year old diabetic.

Take immaculate care of yourself - eat well, exercise, and test constantly ... you should be fine!

I am a type 1 diabetic and I had two beautiful healthy children, now grown and still healthy. Nowadays most doctors don't have any problems with their patients having babies as long as overall health is good and diabetes is under good control.

Hi, jegii!  I'm not a medical professional, just the parent of a kid with diabetes.  I've met a lot of type 1's who have had very successful pregnancies.  The most famous of those is Nicole Johnson Baker, who was Miss America 1999, and was diagnosed in 1993.

Every recommendation I've heard about type 1 and pregnancy is that you should get your a1c as low as possible even before attempting to get pregnant.  That makes control during pregnancy easier.  Many endos will advise you to test more frequently during the day, and if you're not on a pump they will recommend it.

So basically what you need to know is to get as tight of control as possible as soon as possible, and do whatever you can to maintain that control.

Theye is no reason that a Type 1 diabetic can not have a baby.  But that being said it is not an easy thing and you must maintain very tight control of your sugar levels while you are doing it.  I would strongly advise seeing a Dr. before attempting to get pregnant both to discuss your diabetes and to discuss how to have one.
