Diabetes Month: How do you love to get active with your family or friends?

A favorite for holidays like Thanksgiving, and any day: take a stroll after dinner.

Hi everyone.  I take my dogs walking every morning.  They insist and so I oblige.  Good for me and them both.  I recently bought a new home treadmill.  It is really nice to use.  I can now notice my fitness levels dramatically improving.

I have registered for a 5 km run event this year, and a 10 km one early next year.  By signing up for these I am motivated to keep active and be fit enough to participate.

My children are still young, so we just do usual things, like I take them swimming, walking in the mall.... holidays at the beach where we try to do lots of walking.

Good luck on the marathons! How will you maintain your BS levels while participating in the marathons?
Hi CM,
I eat ketogenic diet these days (very low carb, moderate protein, high fat).

With this diet my body burns fat instead of carbs. I also need to use only a very minimal dose of insulin these days as well.

So during long distance running I would check my blood sugar before, about hourly during, and after.

If necessary I would then take some carbs to prevent going low.  However, at the moment in training I am finding my blood sugars are very stable and I don't need to do anything.

If you are taking any drugs that can make blood sugar go too low, such as sulfonurea drugs, then you should not take that drug before the exercise (unless you know it will not make you go low).
During the running I will typically not take any food, just water.
Here is some more information from MedHelp.org and the Sugar Sense app on diabetes and running marathons. http://www.medhelp.org/diabetes/articles/Can-I-Still-Run-Marathons/1739
