You could ask your dr about Humalin-N and Humalin-R, which tend to be cheaper. But these are not available as mixed insulins and need to be taken as MDI (Humlin-N, twice a day, and humlin R- abouy 30 minutes before eating).
To Reduce insulin requirements, you can follow a low carb diet, reduce weight (if overweight), and add in daily exercise. This should be done under medical supervision as these measures may mean you can reduce your insulin / at risk of low blood sugars. You should test frequently to know what blood sugar is doing and to avoid lows.
