HbA1C

I just received the results of my HbA1c blood test and it was 5.6. Is that normal or considered pre-diabetic? I also had a fasting blood sugar done in Oct.2009 that was 107.

HI,

if you are concerned about weight (to maintain) then you need to eat higher fat.  This should come fro

m healthy foods and complex carbs that digest slowly.  Good foods which are energy dense include nuts, foods like avocado, eggs, meats.... these will give you calories, but won't increase your blood sugar....

Make sure you eat healthy fats with your carbs.  These also slow down the carbohydrate absorption.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to eat less carbs but it's hard for me because I am very thin.  Cutting carbs causes me to lose weight. It's so confusing because my Dr. said my HA1c was normal but from everything I've read, 5.6 really isn't that great.  My Dad got diabetes in  his 40's.  I am 54 and am afraid my glucose level is creeping up.

Hi,

Optimal HA1C is about 4.8.  Diabetic is diagnosed once it gets higher than 6.0.

So 5.6 is higher than you'd want and yes, could be prediabetic.

Consider this your notice to get serious with healthy lower carb eating (particularly avoiding sweets and eating complex carbs in smaller portions) and exercise.

Educate yourself about diabetes and it's prevention.
