Metformin and Fruit suggestions?

I was diagnosed for type 2, PCOS, high thyroid and in-fertility. I'm on Metformin 500mg 2/day for type 2 diabetes. Also on fertility medicine Femara and thyroid medicine, typing to get pregnant. I need some fruit to take Metformin. Just Metformin is making me more nauseous and discouraging. So I eat one date fruit with every Metformin i,e just after swallowing Metformin. Is this okay?. Also I eat grapes now whenever I feel like need more energy to move around. Is that good?

I lost my apetite after started Metformin. So trying to be more on fruits. Will this help leveling my blood glucose or am I worsening it? I really need your help and suggestion RE: what fruits are good with metformin? Pomogranate, Cherries, oranges, apples (I hate apples though)? Please advise
Thanks,
Bhuvana

I understand, some people just aren't pill swallowers.  I'm sure one date morning and evening is fine.  Three dates are supposed to equal one exchange so that would be 5 grams of carbohydrate per date (I believe prunes are the same).  I'm not sure if type 2's need to be following the exchange diet, I am also a type 1 so I do, but it can't hurt  if you are trying to keep your carb intake low.  So, just make sure to count it into your carb allowance if you are following exchange lists (let me know if you don't know what I'm talking about and want some help with it or something).
I am also on metformin, the same dose, but after awhile I seem to have gotten used to it and it no longer makes me sick unless I don't eat while taking it.  I don't know how long you have been on it, but with time hopefully you'll begin to tolerate it better.  I believe it will also help you with infertility won't it?  I know it affect women's cycles because of the insulin resistance, which I have had issues with, but I've never looked into it too much since I don't plan on having kids.  Just curious..
Hope that helps :)

"I'm in need of some kind of sweet to swallow the medicine" Why?  Isn't water good enough? Its not meant to be chewable, one swallows the pill in its whole form where it leaves no after taste.

Thanks a lot for your response. I do eat food before taking Metformin. What I meant was "I'm in need of some kind of sweet to swallow the medicine". This may looks very childish, but I mean it. So I'm taking a date fruit with the medicine. Is that okay?

I will look into the websites you suggested, thanks a lot

Any other suggestions / comments welcome

Thanks,
Bhuvana

Metformin should be taken with foods to "help" prevent nausea. One date is not enough food. Google search using the standard search term "metformin vs xxxx", where xxx is your other medication, to see if there are contraindications between them to cause your loss of appetite and/or nausea.

Certain fruits contain high amounts of sugar. Go here for a list.  http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/hi_sugar.htm  Test your glucose level 2 hrs after consumption to see if you can handle specific fruits. I, for one, can eat melons and berries, no other fruit.
