Metformin and losing weight

My Mom is taking Metformin to control her blood sugar level. She was never heavy, but now she's only 97 pounds. I've been hearing something about Mteformin aiding in, or causing weight loss. Has anyone else heard of this? Should I be concerned that the medicine may be making the problem worse? Also is there anything she should eat/take to gain weight without raising her glucose level?

Yes Metformin can cause weight loss, I lost about 25 needed lbs real quick with a low carb, nothing white diet. I have tried not very successfully before metformin and did not lose the weight. My weight loss has slowed down since I got over the intial scare of being diagnosed with type 11 diabetes. and learn more of what I can eat and what I should not.  My best to you mom...

Metformin (Glucophage) must be taken with food otherwise it may cause nausea or vomiting, gas, ingestion, and abdominal discomfort leading to loss of appetite and, of course, excessive weight loss. Your mother might want to switch to the long-acting form of Metformin, called Metformin ER, which has fewer side effects in patients. Please discuss this with her doctor.

metformin can help with weight loss, but typically like 10-15 lbs in someone that needs to lose it... and it's just an aid.  I would say there is another reason... age, eating habits, etc.
