Low Blood Sugars

Hi,

I had a hypoglycemia episode on 13 August.  I will admit I have not been managing my sugar levels and have not been looking after my condition.  Now, that I went thru this ordeal and finding myself almost at a point of dying, I have been checking and trying to monitor my levels.  I have been having too many low blood sugars.  Unfortunately my endocrinologist cannot see me right away and I need some advice on managing low sugar levels.  For the last few days I have been feeling very tired, sleepy and down.  Any advise on how to adjust my insulin intake and overall advise on next steps.

Thank you!

Zazoo,
Good for you to assert your needs to your doc.  Keep good records for a while -- what you eat, what you inject, what your BGs are.  Before too long, I'm certain you'll begin to see patterns taht you can discuss with your doc and tweak your routine a bit.

It's terrific that you've heeded the wake-up call.  I'm not a physician either, but a long time diabetic.  Since this is a chronic disease, I think it's rather human & normal for us all to go thru periods when we are more motivated and periods when we less motivated to nurture ourselves.

We "know" the risks and yet it's tough to be on top of things all day everyday.  I think of managing our disease much like doing a marathon ... we have to pace ourselves; accept the ups 'n' downs, and keep our eyes on the long term goal.  In my case, my goal is to lead a healthy active life until I'm ANCIENT!!  ;-)

I wish you well!

Thanks so much for your prompt reply and suggestion.

I saw my doctor yesterday and she suggested I adjust short-acting insulin when I am experiencing lbs and check more frequently.

Secondly, I attended Diabetes Education 10 years ago so I insisted I need a refresher and would like her to schedule me for one.  I think being in the same room with other diabetics will help me understand my condition and will also allow me to share what I am going thru.

Thanks again this forum has been helpful.

I am not a physician, but the mom of a child with diabetes. I cannot give medical advice.

I would suggest that you call your doctor and tell them that you cannot wait to be seen. You need to have him adjust your levels immediately. I would fax your numbers to your doctor and have them adjust your dosage, we do this with my daughter if she runs too high or too low between appointments. If the doctor will not do that I would have someone drive you to the ER or call 911 the next time it happens so that you can get the help you need. DO NOT DRIVE when you are feeling low.

I would also suggest that you keep quick sugars handy along with some handy snacks, like cheese and crackers. Having those after the glucose will help to stabilize your levels.

I hope this helps. Please let us know how you are doing.
