Ok.
246 is never normal.
Children's normal blood sugar levels are typically lower than those of adults.
Normal fasting levels (first thing in the morning, and also before eating a meal (assuming about 3 - 4 hours between meals) are in the range of 60 - 90.
Normal 2 hours after a meal would normally be < 100 (however, should always be < 120).
What is his typical fasting level, first thing in the morning before eating and drinking?
What is his level at 2 hours after a typical meal?
Is his weight normal for his age?
Is he losing weight? Is he drinking more water than usual / urinating a lot?
How does he feel and how are his energy levels.
Given his numbers I would be keeping him away from sweets and even restricting fruits. make sure he gets protein and fats with every meal and try to keep the carbohydrates whole grain.
We have an appt to see the pediatric Endocrinologist but not till next mth. His sugar goes from 79 to 246 in a day never the same this is done first thing in the am before food and drink And also a couple times during the day and before bed. I have Google stuff but I can't find what is should be and when. The er told me I could bring him in but if his level was normal by the time We got there they wouldn't do anything. Diabetes runs in the family.
Your child needs to be seen by a doctor immediately. This could be Type 1 diabetes.
Untreated it can become life-threatening. Go to the ER if you can't get to a doctor,
An glucose level of 244 mg/dl is unhealthy, especially if you saw this first thing in morning b4 breakfast or 2-3 hours after a meal. Your 5 yo needs to be seen by a doctor ASAP. Also, glucose is still on the rise from the foods you ate 1 hour after a meal. Testing at this time provides inaccurate results, thus the 2-3 hour wait period when glucose has plateaued in the body.
Is this done 1-2 hours after the meal is done with no snacks or sugar in between? When are you checking or supposed to be checking?
