It is a spiral, weight gain, diabetes causes weight gain... as to which came first they dont know. some study's have a sudden un explained weight gain before diagnoses.
Its not diabetes which causes weight gain, it's weight gain which causes diabetes. Her first step is to lose the weight, make lifestyle changes with her eating habits, and start performing 30 minutes of physical exercise daily. A huge number of people have been able to reverse their diabetic condition back to normal just with weight loss. Read other threads on this forum as nutritional advice and weight loss has been discussed a number of times - what to eat, what to avoid.
Onto her current doctor, dump him/her. Testing for diabetes has been part of the normal annual health check-up for the past ten years. To be shocked indicates someone is w-a-y out of touch with reality and truly raises a red flag.
As far as her unusual body odor, diabetes and people with urinary tract infections will sometimes produce a different kind of body odor. If it is a sweet smelling, almost fruity body odor she has excess keytones [when the body burns fat instead of sugar for energy]. If she is on insulin, the insulin can also create an acetone like smell. Neither is good to have but both are treatable. She should be analyzed by a specialist, an Endocrinologist, a doctor who trained and specializes in diabetes.
"Its not diabetes which causes weight gain, it's weight gain which causes diabetes" It is not a cause but a contributing factor, one of many factors that can make a person diabetic
You need to go back and do some research. 20% of T2s are NOT over weight. there is a large genetic component for T2s, much bigger than for T1s.
just because people are fat when diagnosed does NOT mean they where not having insulin issues before, it just means they did not see the problem.
I can use the same fuzzy science on T1s
being skinny causes T1 diabetes. thats when people find out there T1 therefore its being skinny that causes T1s. the truth is its an autoimmune disease, we know that now... we didnt 200 years ago.
The truth is they dont know exactly what causes diabetes T2. If it was just being over weight why arnt ALL people over weight diabetic. (they arnet by the way)
it is also well known that many people have sudden unexplained weight gain before being diagnosed.
Just because they say it on TV does NOT make it true.
For your reference, the definition of "causes" by Merriam-Webster:
a : a reason for an action or condition
b : something that brings about an effect or a result
c : a person or thing that is the occasion of an action or state; especially : an agent that brings something about
d : sufficient reason
Now, if you combined 'contributing causes' you would get "Condition or event that increases the frequency or severity of a problem.", which is akin to 'a' and 'b' above. Bottom line you can use either cause or contribute as a verb to state the resulting consequences.
Additionally, where in the world did you get diabetes causes weight gain? If not properly treated diabetes causes unexplained weight loss. Furthermore, surely you cannot suggest that it is solely an autoimmune disease as there are hundreds of thousands who are medicinally induced t2'ers, and hundreds of thousands other peeps with Endocrine disorders - pituitary, thyroid, kidneys and pancreas which caused their t2. Fact is, if one is overweight with a BMI over 30 then are diagnosed t2 chances are very high their diabetes was caused by weight issues.
Truth be known medical science does know t2 diabetes can be caused by genetics, or from being overweight, or from side effects of medication, or from an Endocrine disorder. Yes, these are all contributing factors that cause diabetes. Try speaking first hand with Endocrinologists for research, I do.
I want to thank you, ever so much, for taking the time to respond to my post! Additionally, you did it in such an intelligent and informed manner - which always impresses me. :-) Kudo's!
Through the years of my own chronic back pain (blah, blah, blah) I stumbled quite by accident upon medhelp and I've not only continued to return but referred so many others. One thing this site has taught me time and time again is how informed and savvy the posters are! One primary care physician doesn't have all the answers either - that is a fact.
I have tried to get my daughter to log on and start reading. Since she has a shoebox full of prescriptions I thought she she learn what they do and why she needs to take them. The diabetes is the latest, and by far the most severe condition she has to date. Let's hope her notorious stubborness doesn't get the best of her this time!
Again ... thank you for you wealth of information and experience! Take care.
You're welcome, slenderthread. Thank you for the kind words. Do not hesitate to open a new post if any questions arise in the future. I wish you and your daughter the best.
" 20% of T2s are NOT over weight. "
I guess this means 80% are overweight. My 60 pound loss certainly was THE contributing factor in my diabetes reversal.
OK good for you. When you say reversed I hope you dont mean cured. You still have diabetes, just with no symptoms. It will be back, with age and or weight gain.
You are controlling it with diet and or exercise
diabetes86 - If you took the time to read previous comments posted by asok475 - which are easily distinguished by the 6 petal lavender icon - you will see he never has stated 'cured' but always refers to continuous control and management of his diabetes after his reversal.
Please buy yourself a dictionary and stop putting words out of their contextual meaning. Reversal defined is "A change to an opposite direction, position, or course of action."
No i did not read his other posts.
I was not answering just him, lots of other people read this forum. While the dictionary term for reversed is as you say, many people take the meaning of reversal to mean cured.
"I was not answering just him,"
Really? Your post starts with "OK good for you" then followed with "you"
throughout your comment. You used "you" to address asok, not other readers.
"many people take the meaning of reversal to mean cured."
Many people who know the definition of reversal understand that it does NOT mean cured. Those who fail too grasp this should buy a dictionary or find one online.
Enough of this. If you wish to continue this debate let's take it offline. It's not courteous to hijack someone else's thread by straying from the original posters subject matter.
Sorry;
Let me apologize to slenderthread for hijacking the thread.
To asok475 and WaveRider Sorry, I apparently come across as way to confrontational, not my intent.
Not a problem. Enjoy your day.
