High sugar

Can having a head cold and my monthly cycle affect my blood sugar. I'm new to this; could the area I stick my finger affect it as well.  The lady from the diabetes center said to stick on the side.  Slept most of the day.  Had steamed broccoli with garlic sauce on the side and wonton soup and a homemade smoothie with fruit yogurt and oatmeal and fresh fruit kiwi and a banana how could my blood sugar be 201.  I also had 1/4 of grapefruit and almonds and peanuts.

The information you've been given seems pretty solid.  The meal you described was loaded with carbohydrates and that will cause blood glucose readings to be all over the place.  I would speak to an endocrinologist and perhaps a dietitian to help get you on the right track.  In short, avoid carbs as best you can.

Hi,

although it may seem counterintuitive, the best way to prevent low blood sugar is to eat less carbs, which cause swings in blood sugars, and to eat plenty of healthy fats, protein and only a little carbs coming from non-refined sources.

My preferred breakfasts are coffee with cream (no food), eggs done all sorts of ways and preferably accompanied by some fresh veges or salad, bacon / sausage and eggs, if I'm in a rush nuts and cheese, small amounts of greek yoghurt and some nuts and berries (greek yoghurt is pretty low carb).  All of these have fairly minimal effect on blood sugar for me.

What do you eat for breakfast?  If I don't eat I get shaky and the sweats.  Trying to avoid that.

Hi im jackie and i have been a diabetic since i was 13 and i know the struggle about keeping your blood sugars under control and i was on the same medication you are on as well for a year until i got off of it and switched to insulin and with the smoothie you had that was way to much sugar limit that to 8oz of sugar like orange juice or apple juice or even V8 juice they have all kinds of flavors and i love it or sometimes get 8oz glass of water and slice up a lemon and put one sliced lemon in your cup

Ty, the banana and kiwi and oatmeal were in a smoothie with steel cut oats and milk my breakfast.  And the garlic sauce came from the Chinese place so I don't know what was in it.  But probably cornstarch.  I didn't even think that; that little amount would raise my blood sugar ^100.  No more Chinese for a while.  Not taking metformin but thanks for the info.

Carbohydrates raise Blood Sugar (BG)
wonton is a carb  carbs raise BG
fruit is high in carbs   Carbs raise BG
oatmeal is very high in carbs   carbs raise BG
banana  is high in carbs   Carbs raise BG
grape fruit has carbs   Carbs raise BG

what was the garlic sauce made of?  flower?  corn starch?  Both are high in carbs.

*** also do NOT eat grapefruit while taking Metforman (glucophage) and many other drugs do not get along with grapefruit.  It is listed in the info paper that comes with the drug.   I can make the effectiveness of Metformin
variable.
