I think I have Diabetes?

Hi guys.

I'm an 18 year old male and I think I may have diabetes.

First of all, let me just say that I had a full fasting blood test done about 5 months ago and it didn't show anything up, however I didn't have these 'symptoms' then so maybe I should request another blood test?

Over the past 3 months or so, I've been having these symptoms : Hungry alot, even after eating a meal, I sometimes get shakiness when I feel hungry, I have the URGE to drink water and when I get this thirst I feel 'agitated', it also seems hard for anything to quench my thirst. I generally feel tired a lot and sometimes weak.

The first symptoms that set in were hunger and shakiness. I went to the doctor because it worried me (I am diagnosed with anxiety, mainly health anxiety) and he said it was nothing to worry about and it was just my anxiety that was making me feel this way.

A little while after I started to get thirsty accompanied with a dry mouth, then all the symptoms came as one with the hunger, shakes, feeling agitated when thirsty.... I also recently noticed that my urine has started to smell sweet which I hear is a classic symptom of diabetes.

I said I'm tired alot, but I've always been tired for as long as I can remember, but I think this has something to do with my insane bodyclock.

I can never keep a good sleeping schedule, it's all over the place. Mainly because of my anxiety, it takes me ages to get asleep at night.

So do these symptoms sound like Diabetes? It's really beginning to worry me now.

I drank a coke and tested my urine all through the day and they all came back negative. Could this mean I'm not diabetic?

Blood sugar peaks 2-4 hours postprandial, not 6 hours. Go to the web site Wave posted in his thread so you don't mistake what is correct. Cheap meters may not produce accurate results every time. If you value your health invest in a good quality meter. Consumer Reports listed Johnson & Johnson LifeScan Ultra meters as the most reliable. Search around, J&J offered free meters last year.

you need to try drinking a coke and an hour after and every hour after that see how the strip looks.  If your diabetic the sugar will show up 6 hours after you've had alot of sugar/carbs.  i would say by a cheap meter like the ones for $25 at wal mart that is on a vial of strips.  Check yourself a couple hours after you eat every time for 3 days at least

I'm having PC issues so I apologize in advance if this is double threading.

Lets clarify glucose testing. Oral (OGTT), fasting, and urine tests measure glucose only at the time of the test. It is unaware of what your levels were 10 hours ago, two days ago, or a week ago. This is where the A1c (HgbA1c/HbA1c) test comes to play. Go here to understand what it is about and why doctors use it to help determine if you a diabetic or not.

Also, keep in mind that stress/anxiety does not cause diabetes, although it may be a trigger for the body turning on itself diabetes. as in the case of Type 1 diabetes. It does, however, make the symptoms worse for those who already have.

Bottom line, go see a doctor and get tested. There is no other way to determine diabetes except by testing at a doctor's office.

I got a home testing kit to test for glucose in the urine. I've tested on several different occasions today and they all came back negative.

Is this a good sign? Could doing this one test rule out diabetes or doesn't this pick up diabetes at all?

Thanks

Go here to learn and understand diabetes http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp

Go see an internal medicine doctor and get tested for diabetes. You said you went but no mention of any testing just being sent away with no problem diagnosis.
Go see another doctor if your current one doesn't take the time to check you out.
Go see a psychotherapist or a psychologist about your anxiety problem too.
