Increase in Blood Sugar Levels post surgery

My mother, aged 79 years, a hyperintensive and a diabetic for several years, recently underwent a CABG surgery for a Triple Vessel Disease on July 13, 2010 and was discharged from hospital on July 21, 2010. She is recovering, yet her blood sugar levels continue to be high and is being administered Novomix 30 ( 20 units before before breakfast and 10 units before lunch). Prior to surgery, she was taking Amaryl 1mg tablets once a day. Is this increased BSR levels following a surgery common enough, are there any implications and what should be the desired course of action?

Yes, surgery is a stress to the body and any form of stress can cause increased blood sugar. The insulin mixes are a very old and not particularly effective type of insulin. If they don't control her blood sugar I would suggest speaking to an endo about putting her on a basal/bolus regimen. (Long-acting insulin once or twice a day and short-acting insulin with the dose to match the food she is actually eating before each meal) That is the standard of care for insulin use.
