Wave rider's info is good and particularly you should follow her recommendations on diet..
175 is far too high and already qualifies as out of control.
Normal blood sugars should be under 120 at all times (even after eating).
First line medication for diabetes is usually metformin/glucophage. Maybe you can ask your doctor if this medication might be suitable.

This results to throat and respiratory infections like sore throat, sinusitis, coughs, and colds." Use with caution if you have heart issues. Also, Avandia is the other drug that falls into this classification. The FDA warns not to use Avandia for first time users, in fact, the FDA severely restricts its use.
You can read about the different oral diabetes medication classifications and drugs that fall into each class here.

Always ask your doctor why he/she is Rx a drug vs others on the market. I know it is not always possible at time of evaluation but your doctor should have outside office contact via email or direct phone line, bypassing the front office nursing staff. You may want to ask for another drug.
"..my sugar is not out of control and my numbers are always under 175."
I don't know what makes you feel this way but your numbers are out of control. If they don't fall into the normal category range, fasting and postprandial, there are out of control. Pay strict attention to food types by avoiding "white" foods - potatoes, pasta, white bread, crackers, white rice, etc - as these quickly enter your blood stream as sugar. Carbohydrates and dairy products too. Good luck -
