Wacky Responses to Sugar Consumption

Why do I have suck wacky responses?  I am compliant with guidelines, medicine and protocols.  My AIC is 8.9 and a 12hr fast gives me a 17.6 lab reading.  If I fast longer my sugar goes higher.  A 8 hr morning fast gives a 14 to 16 reading and goes up from there.  My reading also goes up after exercising.  This morning I was at 16.3 after a 8 hour fast so just to see what would happen I added a 5g teaspoon of sugar to my decaf with breakfast and then went to the Y to exercise for 1 hr. .  There was certainly more whistle in my teapot today!  One hour later I was at 14.3 and another hour later at 13.4.  What is going on with me?

I am new to the group but not to diabetes.  I have been dealing with this for 17 years and if I convert your numbers right from mmol/l to the American of mg/d your morning fasting of 14 converts to 252, which is way too high for fasting.  Your A1C converts to 240 (13.4) average.

These are too high, your goal should be under 100 (5.5) or a bit higher, since my doctors now say under 125 is ok (6.9) and the goal for 2 after a meal should be about 140 -160 (7.7 - 8.8).

If you go on low carbs your body in time will rebel and go into survival mode and dump in glucose it creates since the body needs carbs to survive.  Since our pancreas does not function efficiently it cannot process the insulin needed to counter act.

Also overnight your body can have the dawn effect - basically between the early morning hours it will dump in the glucose and then it is not processed efficiently.  You can go to bed at one reading and wake up higher and there is nothing that can be done, except try a protein snack at night like some peanut butter or greek yogurt.

Carbs are sugars (complex and simple) sugar free items sometimes have more carbs than the regular.

We can **** back and forth,

I will say your body does NOT rebel against low carb diet, it does rebel against low BG, since we are diabetic low BG is not a problem for most of us.  I have been on low carb for 13 years... as soon as I got a meter and saw what carbs do to my BG.

You need to do a little more research on the body and carbs, eating carbs is the FASTEST way to raise BG.  the question is do we as diabetics NEED the fastest way?  The body can make ALL the carbs we need.  We dont need to eat any.  As I said look up "essential nutrients"

If I eat low carb and my BG is over 70 my body IS getting all the carbs it needs. why do you think I need higher BG (that is the result of eating carbs)

OK now you can tell me I am wrong,  I will not continue to beet a dead horse.

PS
damage to nerves and organs (blood vessels and capillary's, happens EVERY time our BG goes over 140 My Endocrinologist from Joslin and other research Ive seen say that) .  You can be happy with BG of  160  2 HOURS after eating,   I am not.

I did read your post! you gave no specifics about your compliance or protocols only your BG numbers .  As such I assumed (an *** out of u and me)  your compliance was with the ADA and other mane stream guidelines, which have way to many carbs.

When you have cut the carbs, do the exercise and still have high BG it might be time increase your drugs and or go on insulin (see you dont say what drugs your on, if your on insulin there is NO REASON for high BG, you need to find out how to adj your insulin for your BG).  That was the case for me, my pancreas just could not do the job any more.  With insulin my A1c is 6.6 :)

I am not sure if you are on meds for this, but I would talk with your doctor to maybe increase or change to give you better control

I'm sorry you did not understand me when I said I was compliant with food, light to moderate exercise and medicine guidelines.  I'm on a very low carb diet and should I ingest carbs my BG goes up and stays up and does not come down regardless that I have complied with the medicines guideline.  My sugar is not down in the morning after a 12 h overnight fast my BG is around 10 to 14. And you are wrong, for a person with Type II Diabetes I should strive for a fasting BG of 5.5 to 7.5 and 2 h post food consumption my BG should peak no higher that 10 to 12.

Are you on insulin?  You need to be on insulin and you need to learn how to use it correctly.

This is the way to control your blood sugar, along with low carb diet, and exercise.

There are books available to help you learn how to best use insulin:-

In response to you being in compliance.

Diabetes is a disease that WE must regulate,  BG changes all the time due to food, stress, pain, infections, activity level... the list goes on and on.

Frankly the MDs get there knowledge from books and what they are told.    EVERY person reacts to food and medication different.  The MDs cam only tell us what they have learned and if we dont get the results needed they can only shpeel back the line they learned. and as you know that line does not work, your compliant and your numbers are bad.  the Mds can guide us, but control is up to us.

We KNOW carbohydrates raise BG.   That is what our bodies do with carbs... convert them to BG.   We also know that you do NOT need to EAT carbohydrates to live.  Just look up essential nutrients,  our bodies can make ALL the carbohydrates we need.  and then some (as you know from your BG)

PS  It is imposable to eat 0 carbs  lettuce and brokoly and even meat have carbs  small amounts but they have some.

First; your numbers too high (way too high)  its NOT sugar its CARBOHYDRATES that raise BG (sugar is a carb) so is wheat, rice, potato, pasta and yes sugar.

fasting
fasting over night, could be in the AM you are getting DP (Down Phenomenon) your body getting ready for the day and your liver lets loose with glucose (you dont need it but your liver does it anyways)  Then going without eating can raise BG more because your starving and again your liver says lets put out some glucose.
exercise;  strenuous exercise will raise BG (strenuous exercise releases adrenalin, adrenalin causes the liver (you guest it) release BG (it thinks your running away from a tiger)  Less strenuous exercise uses BG and does not cause the liver to dump BG.

BG changes all the time  eating 5gr of sugar and testing over 1 hour later the sugar is long gone,

to find out what is going on with your BG you need to keep good records.

AM BG
pre food BG    how many carbs you eat
1 hour after food BG
2 hours after food BG

before exercise  BG
during exercise  BG and exercise level
post exercise BG
1 hour after exercise BG

random tests will give you random info.

what you gave as an example of BG is random BG The ONLY thing I can say from your BG reading is that your BG is much too high, if you dont get control of your BG you WILL end up with complications from diabetes.

PS normal BG is 3.6 to 6.7  over 7.8 is when damage to your body begins.   the more often and the longer you spend over 7.8 the more damage you are doing.
