The fasting period prior to taking a preprandial test is 8 to 12 hours. Anywhere in between 8 and 12 is OK. It doesn't have to be in the morning. It can be any time as long as you do NOT eat or drink colored liquids up to the time of testing.
You can have something to eat at 7am, fast until 3pm or until 7 pm then test. The open period is between 3pm and 7pm.

The 7 mmol/l, which is 126 mg/dl, to 12 mmol/l, which is 216 mg/dl, as being normal contradicts this paragraph taken from the Diabetes.co.uk web site http://www.diabetes.co.uk/whole-blood-readings-to-plasma-converter.html

"For those people that use a blood glucose meter calibrated for whole-blood, pre-prandial (before a meal) levels should stand between 80-120 mg/dl. For bedtime, blood glucose should stand between 100-140 mg/dl. For those people using meters calibrated for plasma alone, pre-meal should be 90-130 mg/dl, whilst bedtime goals should be 110-150 mg/dl."

you wrote 7-12 and i hope you meant tp print 70-120 as the " norm " and you are correct, check your sugars proir to meals. illness' do tend to affect your blood sugar levels. also, diabetics need to know that if they avoid that cupcake or cookie then they will be fine. all foods are broken down into simple and complex sugars. a bowel of pasta for example instead of that cupcake may provide more sugar for your body to allow into your cells. it is a misnomer that only sweets affect your blood sugars as you and i know. i think the hospitals and doctors offices need to do a better job explaining diabetes and the different forms and the different treatments. i have a friend who refuses to eat anything sweet at all secondary to her prediabetic diagnosis but eats everything else that isnt nailed down which isnt any good as far as diet control goes.

A good starting point for nutrition http://www.diabetes.org/nutrition-and-recipes/nutrition/overview.jsp

Test in the morning before eating - prenandial (fasting)
Test 2-4 hours after eating - postnandial
Maintain a log of your test results, especially after meals. Be sure to notate what you ate and eliminate those foods doing harm.  For example; I can eat melons, pears, and berries but not tropical fruits such as pineapple, guava, or mangoes. The latter will spike my glucose above the 200 range. Once you understand what foods you can and cannot consume you can reduce the postnandial testing. Basically, stay away from sugar and bad carbs and do moderate exercise like walking on a routine basis.

i am a qualified nurse and look after a lot of patients with diabetes also my mother and grandmother where type2 your blood sugar should range from 7 to 12 as a normal level you should always take your blood sugar before administrating your insulin as slight infections or common colds and things can change ur insulin levels and you could end up giving yourself to much insulin. 2nd diet just try to cut down on sugary items if you have a main meal of say chicken and veg then you can have a small pudding try not to cut sugar out of your diet all together as we still need to have sugar in our bodys but try to stick to sugar free items and low in fat, excercise also can help in diabetes if you are overweight then increasing excercise can bring down the amount of insulin that you take but you should speak to your doctor reguarding that there is plenty of supporrt groups around to help and websites. hope all is well take care nic. x

You might want to test much more than once a day since you are just starting out.  I have been dealing a while with this (not that I am an expert) but am finding that except for "pure sugar" I am free to eat pretty much anything.

It is how much and how often you eat that matters.  You do have to pay good attention to what/when you are eating, the best thing I found was to have the advice of a good Diabetes Nurse or Physician willing to give you the time needed.  I have meetings once a month with a group and simply discuss with the Nurse (& each other) how we are doing and how we might improve.  Access to our Nurse for questions by phone at any time helps also.

Prenandial (fasting) glucose from 100 to 125 mg/dl has been considered prediabetic since 2003.

Poster PDR did not differentiate whether "The normal range for your blood sugar is 70 to 120." is prenandial or postnandial. Up to 120 prenandial would be incorrect and not a normal range.

I am a Diabetic type 2 and have been since '96. The normal range for your blood sugar is 70 to 120. I take my blood sugars before breakfast, before lunch, before dinner, and before bedtime. I am on 2 different insulins and on Glucophage 1000mg 2 times a day. I am supposed to take my insulin shots 3 to 4 times a day depending on my blood sugar. Please, monitor your blood sugar and take care of yourself so your prediabetes does not get any worse. When yor blood sugar was 150 had you had anything to eat because anything you eat can effect your sugar.
