metformin & elevated liver enzymes?

Can Metformin cause elevated liver enzymes? I take 1500mg 1x daily. My recent blood work shows that my ALT is high 47 and normal is 6-40. My AST and ALK phosphate are elevated but within the normal range.

I believe it is. I'm insulin res. and have PCOS I take metformin for both. U can test ur sugar at home if it's 110 be careful. 85-99 is perfect. The dr did the drink glucose test. I fast the night before. She did some more bloodwork but my bill was $950.00 with Heath insurance. My insulin was 179 the first draw then insulin and glucose was around 190 for the second draw. It should have been dropping not rising. I really need to watch what I eat and excersice bc my dad and his four siblings are diabetics.

Thanks for your response. Is Insulin resistance a precursor to becoming a type 2 diabetic? I am confused? What tests can be done to confirm insulin resistance?

Thanks for using the forum.

Liver enzymes are often elevated in type 2 diabetics. This can be related to the breakdown of stored glucose in the liver. Metformin often helps to return these elevated enzymes to baseline by regulating insulin and glucose levels.
