I want to be vegan

I had anorexia for 3 years and now that I have recovered, I gained 20 more pounds than I used to weigh when I was healthy before anorexia. I am so inspired by vegan ism but don't know if it's right or how to start.

Barb is right to caution you, any restrictive diet needs monitoring and knowledge to ensure it is healthy. There are many people who follow vegan diets that are not healthy. That said it can be a very healthy diet if you choose natural products and are prepared to cook. My daughter is vegan and I regularly eat vegan meals, especially when trying to loose weight. That's because I can have a large meal that is filling by making something like a vegetable stew, lentil bolognaise or vege chilli. Try initially making a commitment to being a meat and dairy reducer, that's what I consider myself to be. Have 3-5 days meat free or make breakfasts and lunches vegan. There are loads of recipes, forums, advice on line. However given your past relationship with food make sure doctors and support network are aware of how you are feeling. My daughter has found a vegan diet is a healthy one both for her physical and mental health but we are all committed to ensuring she eats well. Last check revealed no nutritional deficiencies! Wishing you good health x

How old are you and do your parents agree that this is a good thing to do?

Veganism opens the door to many nutritional deficiencies if you don't know what nutrients are present in which foods.  You really need someone to work with you on an ongoing basis to make sure you get the right foods and supplements to stay healthy.  Also, veganism won't guarantee that you'll lose weight, if you don't eat the right foods in the right portion sizes.

You can lose weight eating a regular diet just as easily.

The best way to begin would probably be to slowly eliminate animal products rather than cutting them out completely, all at once.
