Sunday Weigh-In February 24, 2019

Good morning... Golly, I can't believe another week has passed by.  It's still dark outside, but it looks like it's shaping up to be a gorgeous day - I think somewhere in the 80's.  I do sympathize with those of you still dealing with snow and ice storms, along with the freezing weather.  We've been smelling the orange blossoms and debating whether spring is here - at this point, we hope so, as any trees that are leafing out, or blooming, now (particularly citrus) will be damaged if we get a cold snap.

Anyway, it's been quiet in my world, for a change.  I've been working in my shop, off and on, on refinishing a cedar chest I've had for a number of years.  I got it from a neighbor who was moving away.  She got it from an aunt who had tried to refinish it and messed it up.  She tried to "fix" the finish, but messed it up some more.  The only real fix was to strip it and start over.  In the process of doing that, I damaged some of the veneer, so that leaves removing the veneer and figuring out where to go from there.  The veneer came off the ends quite easily, but then I got side-tracked to other projects and the cedar chest got pushed into a corner of my shop and has been sitting there for a couple of years.  I finally decided I need the space, so my husband helped me pull it out of the corner and I went back to work on it with the idea that it will sit in the middle of the floor until the refinish job is complete!!

Although I do have enough room to walk around the cedar chest in the shop, there's only enough room to do small, minor things at any of the work benches in my shop, so refusing to move it until it's completed is incentive to get if done so I can get it out of the way and move on... Yesterday, I finished removing the veneer from the top and my husband helped flip the chest to its side so I can start on the front.  Hopefully, I'll have time to work on that over the next few days so I can start doing finish sanding, then comes applying the final finish and finally moving the chest into the house and being able to use it.

I've been looking for a pattern for a hanging quilt rack, but couldn't find what I wanted so I decided to design my own.  I got that done, only to realized I don't have enough of any one kind of wood to make it from, so we'll have to make a trip to the wood shop to get some.  We might be able to do that one day next week; we'll have to see what the week brings.

I also have to get another pen made for a friend's birthday gift.  The birthday isn't until March 6, but that's the day of the first procedure on my legs and I'm not sure how those are going to go, so I want to have things organized before I start on them.

Anyway, weight-wise, I'm not doing so well... I'm down by a whopping 0.2 lbs - whoopy!!  I've not a clue what's going on.  My diet has been reasonable, though not great.  I've actually lost weight on my current diet in the past, so there's something going on; it's just a matter of figuring out what it is. I have been craving sugar lately, which is never a good thing, although I've been trying not to give in to the cravings.

My exercise has been good - I walk with my neighbor nearly every day - unless one of us has something going on that prevents us from going on the walk.  Our walk is approximately 1.5-2 miles long.  Many days, I'll go back out in the evening and go for another walk in the evening.  This is in addition to the other things I do during the day, such as housework, yardwork, work in my shop, etc that all include movement, lifting, etc, so it's not like I'm not doing anything other than the walk or doing the same things every day.

I am still struggling with the frozen shoulder on the left side, so doing any type of weight lifting, etc is pretty much out of the question for right now.  I did get my DVD player set up again so I can start doing my yoga again, but some of those poses, too, are more than my shoulder can handle right now.  I'll do the best I can with it though.  It took about 18 months for the right shoulder to thaw, so I should have another 10 months or so before the left one starts getting better, although I keep working at it.

Anyway, that's where I am.  How about y'all?

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

I bought them from Pacific Hazelnut and Northwest Gifts in Aurora, Oregon. Here's the link to the exact thing I bought, I knew we would eat a lot so I bought two sacks, ten pounds of nuts. But you could try five and see what you think.  I specified in my notes when I bought them that if they were not Ennis they should let me know, and they presumably either heeded that or didn't need to, because what came are Ennis. :)

Thank you; I appreciate it. I'll get one bag as I doubt my husband will eat that many so 5 lbs should do me for a while.

Well, I had my order placed and was checking out, but there was only one option for shipping and that would cost more than the bag of nuts, which seems somewhat ridiculous, so I'll wait until tomorrow and call; hopefully, they can offer more shipping options.
Wow, that is ridiculous! I will note, though, that it took a while for the nuts I ordered to arrive and the distance was not far. Ask them to not require you sign for the product, for some reason mine came FedEx and they wanted a signature. That is probably not the cheapest form of shipment!
Did you ever get a useful response about the shipping cost?

You're right - the cedar chest is quite the project and it should have been done years ago.  It's one of those things that I love to do, but always let myself get called away from the project whenever my husband doesn't have any projects to work on and thinks it's my responsibility to find the day's entertainment.  This happens all too often, which is why I never seem to get my stuff done.  I did work on it some more today and made quite a bit of headway in removing the veneer from the front of the piece.  This is going much easier than the top because it only has one layer of veneer, which is very thin, whereas the top had 3 layers of veneer and they were very stuck...

I'm with you on a lot of the repair things... I'll do a few clothing repairs, depending on what needs to be done.  I will do hemming - good thing since I'm short and many things I buy have to be hemmed.  I'll sew on buttons and do other minor repairs, but rarely take things up if I lose weight, because they never fit right once they're taken up.  I very much dislike doing zippers so rarely replace those unless the item is something I "really" like.  I do a lot of household repairs because that's what I was taught to do.

Do you have to have an electrician to repair your light?  Can you simply get a handyman to do that?  That's what people around here do for things like that.  Most handymen are capable of doing things like that and are a lot less expensive than electricians.  My husband does all those things around our house.

Congratulations!!  It's awesome that you're down a pound - even after eating the bag of M&M's... All I have to do is look at something like that and I gain a pound...lol

Would you mind sharing the source for the filberts?  I've looked all over here and have not been able to find any at all.  I'd love to order some.  Nuts are a good source of healthy fats, so it's very possible that a combination of the activity of cleaning, plus chowing down on the filberts contributed to your loss.  Lucky you.

The chest sounds like quite a project. I'm working on getting rid of things that need something to happen to them to be useful -- out go the clothes that need to be hemmed or taken in, out go things that need to be taken for repair, I am too overloaded and if I haven't gotten them fixed by now it probably means I don't need them very much. (This same can't be said for the light fixture over the back porch, though. I just can't get an electrician to come out for that tiny little job.)

Am down about a pound. This puts me at my lightest (by about .1 or .2 of a pound) since we began these challenges last spring. I'm pleased, since I ate a bag of peanut M&Ms last night (and then thought "Why did I do this right before weigh-in?") But it doesn't seem to have cost me.

I finally found a source for Ennis filberts, which are the biggest and sweetest variety, and sent for some a couple of weeks ago. They arrived on Tuesday, and both my husband and I have been eating them as an alternative to more fattening stuff. Maybe they had an effect, or maybe it was just all the farm clean-out work, but at least I'm not gaining.

Light snow here this morning. I envy the 80 degrees!

Have a great week.
