Sunday Weigh-In June 27, 2021

Good morning.  I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend.  It's bright and sunny here today, but I don't expect it to stay that way for very long as we've been having rain every day for the past week, so the days end up dark and damp.  I know I shouldn't be complaining when there are parts of the country that are terribly hot and dry... of course, it's hot here too - just not so dry though we are just coming out of a drought.

Anyway, this past week has been busy, again, but I still don't seem to be getting a lot done.  I've done some work outside, but that's limited with the rain we've had.  I cleaned some more things out of my closet to be taken to the Hospice thrift store but still don't have the box full yet.  I did do some work in my wood shop a couple of days, working on a calligraphy pen.  I had 2 others I'd started, but had difficulty and wasn't happy with them, so just laid them down and walked away.  I did go ahead and finish those, as well.  Still not happy with any of them, but they're done anyway.  I need to do some more research and figure out the best way to make them.  I thought I had it all figured out, but apparently, not.

In addition to making the pens, I've actually worked on a couple of calligraphy projects.  I have a couple of cards to get made over the next few days, so that will be my focus for this coming week.

I'm still working on keeping down the amount of food I'm eating and have started doing a few simple exercises (no need to "jump" into anything... lol).  At any rate, my efforts have helped me lose about a pound this week.  It's awesome to be finally, going the right direction, though my weight does bounce around a lot - I can gain/lose up to 5 lbs over a 24 hr period, so we know that has to be fluid fluctuation, not fat.  I haven't weighed this morning, but yesterday, I was down a pound from last week, so I'll claim that and hope I can keep it going in the right direction.

So - what about you?  Were you able to meet the goal(s) you set for yourself this week?  I look forward to reading about your week.

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

I'm also down a pound this week. :-) Have been doing more substituting of veggies for other stuff I used to eat at dinner, and deliberately avoiding starches and sweets. I read that the average American eats 154 lbs. of sugar a year (this includes the secret sugars in various foods that don't taste sweet) so there is obviously lots to cut! I started with the things that actually taste sweet, later I can worry about the hidden fructose in other foods and the starch in white flour. I'm just glad that when I put my mind to it, I do see a result on the scale. It would be too depressing to eat my veggie bowl when everyone else is having pizza and not see any change!

Weather is very hot here; they expect it to hit 114 degrees today. I don't think I've ever seen a summertime temp in Portland of more than maybe 104, and we thought *that* was dangerously hot. Temps are supposed to drop to the high 80s by Tuesday, but there's been a heat dome with over-100-degree days for several days. Yesterday we went out to buy kiddie wading pools for the dogs, when it was 106 degrees. I was in line behind a guy who had brought his dog to give him his choice of pool. (I think they sell more kiddie pools for dogs than for kids at that hardware store.) We took the dogs and pools out to the farm, where they have a lot of shade and we leave a couple of sprinklers running. But once the temp hits 109, we'll go get them and bring them back to be inside our newer house with its good a/c. They prefer the farm, but I don't know how much heat is too much, and today is going to be so high. The cats surprisingly seem to like being outside. We keep bringing them in, and they keep wanting to go back out.

Due to kids 12-17 getting approved for the Covid shot, we've now got a vaccinated son, meaning the whole extended family is done,(our son being the youngest of all his cousins). It's such a relief. He was nervous about that rare heart issue with the second shot of Pfeizer, but we gave him no choice in the matter (which he grumped about) and he sailed through it. We're setting about enjoying the first week of no school, too -- except we keep forgetting what day it is! Yesterday when I told my son we couldn't go to a business that's closed on Saturdays, my son was really surprised. Turns out it was because he thought it was Wednesday. Being in school does have the advantage that everyone can keep track of when it's a weekend.

Have a good week and stay cool!

WooHoo - glad to hear that you went down a pound, as well.  It’s a good feeling to have something you’re doing, actually produce results.  I often feel like I’m beating my head against a concrete wall and the weight is never going to go away, but I know it will, if I just work at it.

My winter neighbor is back in Portland and she’s been telling me how hot it is there.   It’s not unusual for us to get over 100 degrees, so we don’t think that much of it.  We do what needs to be done in early morning, when, hopefully, it’s <80 degrees.  I was just reading an article online about the high temps in WA, OR and CA, along with the fire hazards.   I sure hope you don’t get caught in the fire zones again this year, but of course, what burned last year probably hasn’t regrown enough to burn again this year???

I can understand the need for swimming pools for dogs.  If they can’t be in the air conditioning, they have to have a place to stay cool.  But then I read that a lot of people don’t have air conditioning, so maybe the people need to take advantage of the pools, as well…   I’m sure it would be cooler for your dogs on the farm where there’s plenty of shade to help keep the pool water cool.   I have to change the water in my birdbath a couple of times/day because it gets too hot for the birds.

When assessing whether it’s too hot for the dogs, remember, that anything that’s too hot for you to touch (gravel, pavement, sidewalks, etc) is too hot for the dogs.  We constantly have people on our Nextdoor site reminding others that if pavement is too hot for them to walk barefoot, it’s too hot for their dogs because their pads are as sensitive as our feet.

I’m glad your son was able to get his vaccination.  Yeah, the heart issue could be worrisome and had I known about it when I got my shots, I might have hesitated long enough to contact my cardiologist… lol.  It sounds like the adverse effects (heart issue) comes relatively quickly after the second dose, so I do hope your son is feeling better about it.

Oh Gee - I thought old people like me were the only ones to have trouble keeping track of days of the week… lol  When I worked, there was never a question about what day it was because we counted the days to Friday.  I have to make myself pay attention to the day/date in order to stay on top of things.

Have a great week.   :-)
I was so amused by the amnesia about what weekday it was that I was thinking of putting up a sign like they do in nursing homes -- "Today is [SUNDAY] [June 27] and the President is [JOE BIDEN]"  or like that.  :-)
