Sunday Weigh-In June 24, 2018

Good morning... It's another bright sunny day in my corner of the world; how about yours?

There hasn't been a whole lot going on in my life lately.  I've still been trying to get over this eye injury, which I think I've just about got whipped.  I saw my eye doctor again on Friday and he says the scratch on my cornea is "almost" healed (I thought it almost healed the Friday before... lol).  The problem now is that I'm still having blurry vision in that eye but he says it often takes the vision time to catch up with the healing.  He wants to see me again in 2 weeks and if my vision is still blurry, they'll do further vision tests to see if the accident did more damage to my sight than they think or if my vision has simply changed and I need a new prescription for my glasses.

It has been a couple of years since I've had an eye exam so it *is* possible that my vision was getting "fuzzy" in that eye to begin with and I simply hadn't realized it.

One good thing to come of all this is that we've learned that I have cataracts in both eyes that they tell me will have to come out sometime next year... that's kind of a nice thought because it means I'll get new lenses in my eyes and might be able to do away with wearing glasses... That would be really different, as I've worn glasses since I was 16 yrs old after I failed the eye exam when I went to take the test for my very first driver's license!!  No, I didn't get my license until after I got glasses and could pass the test... lol

So, moving right along...  :-)  Friday after I saw my doctor, I met a good friend for my birthday lunch; it was late (the birthday lunch), but hey, she works, so better late than never and she brought me some great gifts... lol!!  I ate really well, sticking with a small bowl of soup and 1/2 sandwich.  I should have done a salad instead of the sandwich, though, because I no longer do well, eating bread and this wasn't just "bread"; it was like a small loaf cut in half.  Actually, that's a bit of an exaggeration - it was like a hoagie bun, but it seemed like there was a lot more bun than there were goodies.
inside it... :-)

All of that said, I was down a pound from last week until I went to lunch on Friday - that helped put the kibosh on everything... My husband and I went out to lunch yesterday and I had salad bar, with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, green pepper, chopped boiled egg, cottage cheese, with a side of chicken, which was not bad at all.  Last night, I did eat some licorice, which is another of my forbidden passions because it makes me swell up like a balloon.

All of that means - this morning, I'm up 1.8 lbs from last week.  Wow, it blew my mind when I stepped on the scale and saw that... I knew I felt bloated, even after we'd gone to a large market yesterday and walked around for about an hour, plus I went out for a walk last night, etc but I had no idea I would be THAT bloated!!

I actually started not to post that increase, as I'm positive it will be down later today once all that bread and licorice get out of my system (yes it takes days for bread to go through  :-(  ), but it wouldn't be fair/honest if I didn't because that *is* my weigh-in weight.  We'll see what happens later...

Okay - that's me and my story; what's going on in your world and how are you doing with your journey?  We're waiting to hear all juicy details...

~~Wishing everyone a wonderful, successful week~~

Sounds like you need a few illicit trysts with the doctor. His full sugar will plump up your get=go.

I'm glad you aren't down more than a pound... you were going down so fast there for a while I was getting worried... I'm glad things are moving along and you will be getting the path report.  I hope it's good news.

Yes, it's a relief that my eye is finally improving; I just wish the blurriness would go away.  I have a feeling that's going to take "something" else - probably new glasses.  My bank account won't like that...  :-)

I'm sure she feels a total sense of relief admitting her affair with the doctor.  Perhaps the affair will come to an end once the stress of moving her husband's office has passed.  On the other hand, what's an occasional rendezvous with a doctor so sweet and crisp as "the Pepper"?  lol

I ate lightly the past couple of days, especially lightened up on dinner. I wasn't sacrificing, either, just was not too hungry. I was out in the car with the dog after dark last night, so we swung in at McDonald's to pick up some Chicken McNuggets, one for her and 5 for me. But after driving away, I found they had accidentally given me chicken strips, and they were really overcooked and rubbery (more like chicken jerky strips). So the dog got a bite of one and I had none, and neither of us was sorry. (In fact, once we got home, she got a whole bowlful of cut-up chicken strips as her dinner and clearly thought life was wonderful.)

But I *have* been sneaking drinks of my illicit Doctor boyfriend, Dr. Pepper, this week, due to the stresses of being on the firing line for moving my husband's office. (There's always something, right? lol) So I didn't know how I would weigh. Last week I was up.  I was just hoping this week the direction would be more downward even if I did not erase the entire gain from last week.

The good news is that when I weighed this morning, I was at my lowest since beginning the challenge. I took off the amount I was up last week (can't remember without checking last week's post if it was 1.6 or 1.8 lbs, but it's gone now) and am even down a fractional amount further. This means I'm down a good 5 lbs. since beginning the challenge, maybe almost 6. (With my digital scale, it's hard to be sure since I didn't write down the pound-point-tenth at the beginning. But the original number did end with a 6 point something, possibly a .2, and now it's at 0 point something. So at least 5 lbs. plus, overall.)

This is great! I am sure it all came from the fact that this week I just felt full on less food, especially at dinner. Saffron Road makes wonderful frozen Indian food, like lamb saag and palak paneer, and especially the palak paneer (which is paneer cheese chunks that look sort of like tofu, spinach and rice) seems to agree with me. It is mild, good, filling but not over-filling, healthy and easy to digest. I ate it three of four times this week and really didn't want the more rich dinners my husband and son like. It clearly helped me stay on an even keel.

Barb, glad to hear about your scratched eye getting better, and the possibility of getting cataract surgery. Everyone I know who has had cataract surgery has liked it, mentioning renewed vision in various ways. My dad said it improved his far vision. My mother-in-law said she could see colors much better. Others have mentioned being able to see detail in leaves on trees and similar things. Hope the eye keeps healing!

Well, aren't you the lucky one... you get to "sneak" around with your illicit boyfriend (lol) and lose weight, as well.  I guess that's what happens when you eat lighter, huh?

So please tell me - what is Saffron Road?  Is that a brand of frozen food you get there, a store, a restaurant?  No, restaurants don't, typically, make frozen food...lol   And what is "paneer cheese"? I've lived a sheltered life you know, so I'm not familiar with a lot of these things... lol   I'm getting brave in my old age and willing to look for, and try, things I'd never have tried in years past.

At any rate, congratulations on your loss; you've done great.

As for me, as I suspected, I was down by 2 lbs this afternoon, so I lost my 1.8 lbs of bloat and swelling from Friday and yesterday, plus went down another 0.2 lbs. Not much of a loss, but in the right direction, anyway...

You're right about my cataracts.  Sitting in the doctor's office all these times over the past couple of weeks, I've had plenty of chances to check out all the posters, etc regarding new lenses once they remove the cataracts.  There are 4 different ones they can put in; each does something different.  One is a mono lens that only lets you see distance, one lets you see close up, one lets you see intermediate and repairs astigmatism and the 4th fixes them all.   I might have the combo with the astigmatism wrong, but I know there's one that does fix them all.  At any rate, there are, of course, different prices for them, with the one that fixes them all being the most spendy, I'm sure, though I haven't talked price yet since I don't have to have mine out until next year and I'm sure they'll be more expensive by then... won't everything?  lol  Of course, since I have astigmatism, I'm going to want one that fixes that for sure... lol

I'm doing landscaping this week so trying hard not to injure anything else, now that my eye is healing... lol
Wear goggles, or those eye protector things construction guys wear on work sites. I'm sure you can even get them in a sunglasses version!

Saffron Road is a frozen-food company (like Stouffers or Amy's, single-serving meals) that evidently specializes in Indian food. Around here it is carried by grocery stores, you don't have to search it out at specialty shops, but you generally have to look at ones that carry slightly gourmet and more organic stuff along with a pretty big line of regular groceries. (In other words, maybe a teensy gourmet-only shop would be too small to carry it.) If there is a Whole Foods near you, they might stock Saffron Road. (I wonder  if I have even seen it at Safeway. Portland is a big adventurous-eating town.) The food is well prepared and delicious, and they have a whole range of dishes. I don't know much about Indian food and so stick with just a few choices, the lamb saag is lamb in a spinach puree over rice (extremely good, with  wonderful spicing), the palak paneer I have already described, and our local store used to carry a lamb vindaloo of theirs that was outta this world, but apparently did not attract enough of a buying audience so they discontinued it. They have other meals from Saffron Road as well, but I have not branched out much -- for one thing, I wasn't as impressed with their offerings that contain chicken (their chicken vindaloo was a pale shadow of the lamb version), and for another, some are spicier than I like. If you do find them, anything you find that they make with lamb will probably be delicious. (Their palak paneer is of course vegetarian.) Paneer cheese looks for all the world like chunks of firm tofu, but tofu never tasted so good! It's the texture of firm tofu too, relatively soft but it does not melt into goo, it's cut into squares and stays like that with cooking. It's delicious in its spinach puree sauce, and the dish overall makes you feel disgustingly healthy. I have been known to eat it at 10 am, not quite breakfast but too impatient to wait for lunch. As I said, Portland is a foodie town, so it doesn't surprise me to find a frozen-food company specializing in Indian foods on our local grocery shelf. Possibly in Florida you'd have to do a little looking. I like having it on hand. With a child in the house we often resort to a microwaved-in-haste pot pie or spaghetti produced by the thoughful folks at Stouffer's or Marie's when I don't have the time to shop and cook. It's nice that I can also get things like this. (My son is also a fan of the palak paneer.)
I'm not sure why I missed your comment here - perhaps my eye isn't as well as I thought it was... lol

I've got to get a pair of goggles or some type of eye protection before I trim palm, like the one on which I injured my eye...  I do wear glasses so I have to have something that will fit over them as I'm pretty much blind as a bat without them.  One is, often, recognized as safe when wearing glasses, but it's amazing how that frond scratched my cornea without breaking or even dislodging my glasses.  I won't trust them again...

Thanks for the explanation of the Saffron Road items.  I'm going to look for them, though I may not be able to find them in our stores here.  The closest Whole Foods is about 50 miles from me and if I'm lucky, I get there once a year.  We do have a Fresh Market, so I can look there and we also have Earth Fare that carries healthy type things, so I'll give those 2 places a shot.  I'm sure my local Winn Dixie, Publix Stores or Walmart won't have them.   I don't shop at Winn Dixie, but I can tell you almost everything Publix and Walmart has because I'm always looking for something different.  :-)  I don't eat frozen meals very often, but it's nice to have something in the freezer for those times when there simply isn't time to cook a meal.
