What's for Breakfast???

Take our poll .. How often do you eat breakfast?

Then .. tell us either "what" you had for breakfast OR your "favorite" breakfast.  Perhaps we can come up with enough different ideas to create a Health Page for later reference.

IF YOU'RE NOT EATING BREAKFAST .. here is some information that may change your mind!

1.  EATING BREAKFAST KEEPS US THIN.  The National Weight Control Registry has compiled information from more than 3,000 people who have lost at least 60 pounds and kept it off for an average of 6 years.  Feedback from those individuals showed that eating breakfast daily was a weight control strategy for 78% of the people in the registry. Those participants who experienced long-term success also shared that they eat a diet low in fat and exercise for an hour or more each day.  Interestingly .. less than 5% of those who achieved success reported never eating breakfast.

2.  BREAKFAST JUMP STARTS OUR METABOLISM.  The word, breakfast, is derived from breaking the fast after one has not eaten since the night before and is believed to be the most important meal of the day. It is the first chance we have to refuel our body, start our metabolism and begin burning calories.  Not eating breakfast is akin to starving yourself and your metabolism slows so your body can conserve energy.  Your body burns only the calories necessary until the necessary fuel becomes available. So, if you’re trying to lose weight this is the last thing you want.

3.  BREAKFAST HELPS AVOID HUNGER.  First, eating breakfast may reduce the hunger felt later in the day, which may lead to overeating.  It is also felt that nutrients consumed at breakfast may leave us with a better ability to perform physical activity.  Studies have found some indication that those who eat breakfast engage in more physical activity than non-breakfast eaters. It is also possible that eating a good breakfast on a regular basis may simply be a marker for a lifestyle change that includes a low-calorie, low-fat eating style.

4.  BREAKFAST HELPS OUR ABILITY TO LEARN.    The USDA, Harvard University and Tufts University have all performed studies that show children who eat breakfast attain higher scores on standardized achievement tests and have less behavior problems in school.  Once can only imagine the same holds true for adults in our performance at work and home.

NoLeafClover - So glad to hear from you and to see you are making breakfast a priority!  Oatmeal is awesome and you can really change the flavor by adding a favorite fruit (peaches with a little ginger and blueberries or apple with cinnamon are among my favorites).  Don't be afraid to try some eggs, yogurt or some other possibilities just to keep it interesting!  Soon we'll have the NEW MEDHELP FOOD JOURNAL and you'll be able to view the food diaries of those members who are willing to share .. and this will open up a whole new realm of possibilities!

Joeysfoxymama - WoW .. do I LoVe your screen name!  Do know how much you love Joey and how precious he is to you.  Just don't forget that you are that precious to him .. and you may want to think of your breakfast as a gift from your son .. because he wants his mama healthy and around for him for years and years to come.  So ... you may want to try setting your bowl and the cereal box on the counter when you go to bed .. or the plate for your eggs.  This will remind you to also take care of you at the same time you take care of Joey.  You have wonderful breakfasts when you do remember .. but the sooner you remember, the sooner your metabolism starts burning those calories for the day!

ChitChatNine - Know you are ONE BUSY MOM and you excel at focusing and caring for your family.  And, you are doing SO WELL in formulating the behavior patterns that lead to successful lifestyle changes!  KUDDOS TO YOU!  Now, a little something for you to consider ... as you are making breakfast for your family .. and staying on top of getting everyone dressed and out of the house on time .. (after 6:45 of course for your meds) .. try popping in that slice of whole grain toast then and eat a few bites as you go this way and that.  Your metabolism will get kicked off quicker and it could help make the weight come off a little easier.  That's 2 hours a day .. to get it going just a little quicker .. plus it provides you with some "energy" .. :)  Just a thought ..

gardener62 - WELCOME, WELCOME, WELCOME .. we're so HaPpY to have YOU here!!!  Yeah for YOU in the 7-day a week breakfast and for selecting the non-sugared cereals.  The point you make about "measuring" so you are eating the recommended amount on the box is most crucial!  I also found that I was eating at least half again as much as the serving size if not twice as much .. until I implemented the measuring cups.  YOU have learned and shared a valuable piece of information.  THANK YOU!

Have you noticed that a regular cereal bowl is 2-3 times a normal serving size???  I started using a small fruit bowl .. and have now learned what 3/4 c and 1 c look like in the fruit bowl and just where the line for 1/2 c of milk is.  By using the fruit bowl, although smaller, it LOOKS FULL so I never feel cheated.  If I use a standard cereal bowl, even though I'm eating the same amount, I feel like I'm being "cheated".  You really can trick your brain by using these small tricks .. and for my dinner plate, I always use the smaller salad plate.

You said you haven't had much appetite and the weight is still sitting there.  Seems funny, but we have to eat a little more and at regular intervals sometimes to lose.  May I suggest you consider 3 meals and 3 small snacks .. and start out slow.  Eat 1/2 an apple or a small yogurt for a snack .. eating more frequently keeps our metabolism going and keeps our blood sugar levels have smaller fluctuations.

So glad you are here and hope you will remain a regular participant in the community.  There is strength in numbers and we all learn and are sustained in sharing.

Oh .. by the way, yesterday's breakfast was pumpkin pancakes with very little spray butter and SF syrup and this morning was oatmeal with blueberries, cinnamon and a few almonds.

FOOD TRACKER COMING VERY VERY SOON AND THEN WE CAN ALL SHARE OUR BREAKFASTS NOT ONLY IN THIS THREAD .. BUT IN OUR FOOD JOURNALS AS WELL (if we elect to share them .. you will have the same choices of private, friends or everyone).  This will open many new doorways to see and try what others are doing and to learn from the successes and ingenuity of others.  Can hardly wait!  Keep your eyes open!

I'm new here.  Bear with me, please.  Breakfast-7 days a week.  I usually have a bowl of cereal (None of the sugared kind) and skim milk.  I did notice that I was using more cereal than the recommended amount on the box.  So I actually measured cereal and milk.  I was way over that amount.  Measuring can make a big difference.  Now I am a little hungry at lunch and can eat.  Haven't had much appetite, but the weight is still just sitting there...

I try to eat bkfst after I drop the kids off at school.  I am up at 5:30 and take my synthroid around 5:45 and then wait usually an hour before bkfst due to the recommendations of the med . and by then I'm getting the next round of kids up and ready for school ... so usually at 8:45AM I eat when they get off to school .. usually toast and juice of some sort

I have a hard time making time to eat breakfast! I get up when Joey, my 4 month old gets up and give him a bottle. By the time I remember breakfast my day has gone by and its almost lunch!

When I do remember to eat, my faves are 1 cup special k or cheerios, and 1 cup 1% milk. Or, a fruit smoothie, or 2 eggs with a slice of toast and nutella! mmmmm

almost every day, maybe once a week on sundays I don't. It usually consists of oatmeal, flavored with soem slimfast mix, or just of a slimfast shake.

Elaine and Lucinda - Thank YOU BOTH for sharing your experiences with and without breakfast.  I found this true as well and now I can't imagine going without breakfast!

This morning caught me short and I grabbed a SF Hazlenut latte with my cousin.  Lots of caffeine (ohhh myyy) and skim milk .. no whipped topping.  With errands to run and her surprise visit, that's all I had for breakfast.  I WILL do better tomorrow!
